Comp Lobby Change Proposals

over 10 years

Hello comp lobby. As some people are discussing, activity has gone down a bit, and yesterday the lobby was delisted from the front page temporarily. As a result of that, we have some new ideas for competitive and training lobby to help revitalize both lobbies in integration and play. It does look likely though that another lobby will replace this placement on the front page if things do not change. I ask that you please review this if you want things to remain as they are now.

If you would like to see the ideas and proposals for training lobby, please view this thread here.

https://epicmafia.com/topic/63210

For now I will hierarchy things that will be done, and those ideas which would be dependent on Lucid and the undertaking work for them.

Main Changes

1) Lobby rename to ‘Ranked’

Having the lobby name as competitive comes off as intimidating for newer players. Whilst competitions are not going anywhere in this lobby, we want to encourage regular play for those who do not want to influence running competitions.

2) Lower point requirement for entry lowered to 500.

Having an entry amount of 1500 is a very large asking score for someone new to the game. By that time they have either settled down in one lobby with no opinion on moving, or even trying out another lobby. I realize this might lead to more reports being done in comp, but I don’t think it’ll hugely influence the amount of reports that have to be done on average that we have now. Existing limits such as new accounts not being able to participate in current trophy rounds won’t be removed.

Future Changes Pending Feedback

1) Greater new range of achievements.

Not everyone wants to play EpicMafia for trophies, but one thing that I’ve learnt is that lots of people enjoy the stat tracking and trying to get achievements. I feel going into every game with the chance to have a reward or unlock would be great, and we can possibly encourage lobby specifics achievements too.

One example I’d like to see with achievements is a much greater range of unlocks. Let’s take the current hunter achievement which requires you to shoot the mafia in 3 way. This isn’t achievable for everyone, but we can make this achievement accessible for all in some way by having levels without downgrading existing criteria.

Here’s an example

*Level 1: Hit the mafia as Hunter

*Level 2: Hit the mafia 10 times as Hunter

*Level 3 (Ranked Exclusive): Hit the mafia in 3 way as Hunter.

Earning an achievement can gain a small emblem, completing the complete range of achievements can earn a badge.

2) Cycling ‘Assignments’ and challenges

Moving back to the topic of not everyone wanting to run for a trophy, or not having the time to do so, having mini competitions known as assignments could be a new, fun aspect that some players might want to participate in. Like happy hours, imagine having weekly challenges such as who can have the most wins as a particular role, or who can achieve the most cop guilty reports in a week. This can keep things fresh and make achieving more accessible.

3) More community consultation on setups and these new ideas

Having submitted achievements and assignments be as easy as submitting new roles for the game would be brilliant if possible. One problem comp has is autonomy, there’s too much interjection with many actions and not many ways for viewpoints to influence the site.

Concluding notes

We’re fully welcoming in embracing ideas for what might help this lobby thrive, so please rate or give your own for consideration. Thanks guys.

lucid says no and wont budge so u have to deal with it cuz he owns the site lol

Because of the environment. And Everyone keeps saying Lucid says no, but I'd like to hear his arguments against it, not simply "Lucid doesn't want it."
deletedover 10 years
how is it misleading? u play ranked games there
deletedover 10 years
If we're not going to merge then I'm against competitive being renamed ranked. It's misleading. Competitive lobby is a competitive lobby no matter what it's named. If we're not going to change the system, then the one we have right now works best.
deletedover 10 years
UGH. WHY???? How does Lucid suggest we solve the problem???
deletedover 10 years
I am agreement with you the only real way to solve this is a merge. But we've asked lucy so many times before and he just says no

Not having enough player in comp lobby is a miniscule problem, new people are joining and Ive seen plenty of new faces this round. Its fine as it is, no need to merge lobbies

If it was fine as is, then there wouldn't be this discussion about it right now. The mods want competitive lobby to be less exclusive and elitist, which it has become since only really experienced players actually play in it.

And Venus we can still advocate for it. Even if Lucid says no, if the discussion is going to be brought up, should still seriously consider it as a solution. I think if enough people advocate for it Lucid will have to really think it over. Bronto can bring more training members aware of the discussion in the Training Lobby comments because unlike Competitive lobby training actually has an active comment section.

No matter what happens, no matter if the points are lowered or the lobby is renamed, there's going to be little change unless there is a merge.

Exactly what I'm saying. We need to merge.

Yeah the round threads these last few months have been the longest in the last two years.

They are pretty damn big. And mid day EU has always been dead, I remember waiting around 3 hours for a table to fill back in the day

Remember when we tried suggesting that

The system DID work, however, when there were gold hearts in training. Players who would normally play red heart games were trying out gold heart games. The problem this system was that not enough people were joining unranked and ranked games....but this wouldn't be an issue if the lobbies were combined and the requirement for 500 points to play gold heart games was implemented. This would COMBINE both communities, creating a greater pool of players and give something for new players to work for. It would be perfect! You'd have the silly nonsense games (unranked,) the slightly serious but still casual games (red hearts) and the exclusive serious games that you needed to have played for a while games (gold hearts). Each type of game could have it's own gimmick (like the happy hour for ranked games, and so forth) it's own scoreboard!

I'm telling you right now, all having a point cap is going to do is make me irritated that I can't play the games I love and earn points, and I STILL won't join competitive lobby. There is nothing there for me. We need to combine lobbies if the moderators want competitive lobby to become more active.

Merge. Comp = Gold. Ranked = Red.

I've already posted in the Training Lobby Changes discussion, but I feel I should suggest this idea in the Comp. Lobby discussion as well. And my idea is that unranked, ranked, and competitive games should all be in one lobby. I think rather than have two separate, "Training" and "Competitive" lobbies, we should have just one where all three types of games exist. It should still be that you need 1500 or whatever points to play competitive gold heart games, and the rules for the comp games should still apply if the lobbies are combined, but I feel that Competitive lobby is sort of dead on its own. It's a nice concept, but the lobby chat and comment section is dead, and there is only one, two games at most, open to play at a time. I don't think the issue is that new players are 'intimidated' by competitive lobby, it's the fact that from a new players perspective, one who has gotten used to training, competitive lobby looks dead compared to training. Training usually has multiple ranked and unranked games open at a time, and a good mix of casual, serious, experienced and new players, as well as an active chat and lively comment section. Competitive has none of these things, and so barely has a community.

If the ideal system really is to have new players move from unranked to ranked, then eventually to competitive, this system is working - in training lobby. Players are going from unranked to ranked games. What's not happening is the shift from ranked games to gold heart games. This is because the shift is more drastic. Not only do you have to go to an entirely different lobby....you're going to a lobby that barely has games and the people playing are cut-throat serious. And when you run out of hearts, you have nothing to do. So you go back to training.

This idea is the closest you're going to get to it, I've been working this out and talking with Lucid to reunify as much as possible. You have three options, this idea, a dead and delisted lobby, or all of you moving to training with no changes for that lobby.

You do realize that if you decide to destroy whatever is left of competitive with option 2 or 3 then it'll only repel players

Do you think option 2 is my decision Matt?

Isn't option 3 the unified lobby idea you're looking for?
