Comp Lobby Change Proposals

over 10 years

Hello comp lobby. As some people are discussing, activity has gone down a bit, and yesterday the lobby was delisted from the front page temporarily. As a result of that, we have some new ideas for competitive and training lobby to help revitalize both lobbies in integration and play. It does look likely though that another lobby will replace this placement on the front page if things do not change. I ask that you please review this if you want things to remain as they are now.

If you would like to see the ideas and proposals for training lobby, please view this thread here.

https://epicmafia.com/topic/63210

For now I will hierarchy things that will be done, and those ideas which would be dependent on Lucid and the undertaking work for them.

Main Changes

1) Lobby rename to ‘Ranked’

Having the lobby name as competitive comes off as intimidating for newer players. Whilst competitions are not going anywhere in this lobby, we want to encourage regular play for those who do not want to influence running competitions.

2) Lower point requirement for entry lowered to 500.

Having an entry amount of 1500 is a very large asking score for someone new to the game. By that time they have either settled down in one lobby with no opinion on moving, or even trying out another lobby. I realize this might lead to more reports being done in comp, but I don’t think it’ll hugely influence the amount of reports that have to be done on average that we have now. Existing limits such as new accounts not being able to participate in current trophy rounds won’t be removed.

Future Changes Pending Feedback

1) Greater new range of achievements.

Not everyone wants to play EpicMafia for trophies, but one thing that I’ve learnt is that lots of people enjoy the stat tracking and trying to get achievements. I feel going into every game with the chance to have a reward or unlock would be great, and we can possibly encourage lobby specifics achievements too.

One example I’d like to see with achievements is a much greater range of unlocks. Let’s take the current hunter achievement which requires you to shoot the mafia in 3 way. This isn’t achievable for everyone, but we can make this achievement accessible for all in some way by having levels without downgrading existing criteria.

Here’s an example

*Level 1: Hit the mafia as Hunter

*Level 2: Hit the mafia 10 times as Hunter

*Level 3 (Ranked Exclusive): Hit the mafia in 3 way as Hunter.

Earning an achievement can gain a small emblem, completing the complete range of achievements can earn a badge.

2) Cycling ‘Assignments’ and challenges

Moving back to the topic of not everyone wanting to run for a trophy, or not having the time to do so, having mini competitions known as assignments could be a new, fun aspect that some players might want to participate in. Like happy hours, imagine having weekly challenges such as who can have the most wins as a particular role, or who can achieve the most cop guilty reports in a week. This can keep things fresh and make achieving more accessible.

3) More community consultation on setups and these new ideas

Having submitted achievements and assignments be as easy as submitting new roles for the game would be brilliant if possible. One problem comp has is autonomy, there’s too much interjection with many actions and not many ways for viewpoints to influence the site.

Concluding notes

We’re fully welcoming in embracing ideas for what might help this lobby thrive, so please rate or give your own for consideration. Thanks guys.

the reason people overlook a lot is that competitive lobby is dead for morning to early afternoon est, and even when its active games take a while to fill. the lobby being so dead in the first place is why a lot of people don't care enough to wait for games.

I blame SGR a little bit for this, as when I was a wee lad on this site, I was still allowed to be ranked games despite not inherently joining the competition, which allowed me to learn easier. Gold hearts only work with the complete aspect of competitive in mind, but I am not going to defend it as it has it's own share of problems.

The reason competitive is so dead now is because training has no reason or incentive to play in it. They are either too frightened to move outside of training or simply do not care enough to try and get into competition. This problem is not inherently competitive, rather it is how the lobbies are currently set up.

I very much doubt that this will make an enormous impact in the end but I digress, I like the ideas on paper and It's better than what we have now.

Single lobby would completely fix all of this though, just saying.

That is an argument that i do not know the answer to, though it currently appears to be the latter. I do like your first point though, if a lot of training players join than it will exceed the "angry comp player" persona

Yeah, that's what I said when we removed the Training Comp and people cried for an intermediate lobby. If everyone played in one lobby the stigma would almost completely wash away and the lobby as a whole would become more casual. One thing I love about Training is that I see a lot more good sportsmanship. I think that Comp could benefit from having more people around like that. Likewise, Training would benefit from having skilled players show them the ropes in game.

@Kyle; the Training Comp was cool because it got them playing good setups, but there was so much cheating and throwing going on, unfortunately. Even with all the people who'd join there were still always very few games being played in the round. People with losing records in Top 5 etc.

also i could always get gold heart games to fill in training, but i had to make the tables.

Furthermore, I think the only intimidating thing in comp is the playing environment. I seldom play in comp because there's a lot of negativity, if the lobbies got merged you're gonna have personality clash between training players/"noobs" and comp players. Of course that's a very difficult for you to deal with but its just a reality to face

nah i think people would get used to it in a few months.

in training, people lead on you while you're an uncc'd clear in any setup they don't understand

that's because bad training 'vets' are teaching newer players to adapt their mindless habits.

Merged lobbies is the best thing. You know most of the best players on this site came from one lobby. Maxwell Gira Peta kyle.

There are so many more players in training that they would become the prevailing group though and drown out a lot of the stereotypical comp player mentality that dissuades training players from joining.

The real argument is whether you want to say Training is meant to get people ready for Comp, or if Training is a casual ranked community and Comp is for more serious play/setups/meta abuse

I will keep the dream alive until phillip shuts down the site. The Single Lobby Squad will be there torch in hand to show the way.

I'm sorry Ratti. But I fear that will never happen. Rip.

The single most important thing I will ever push for is a merging of training/competitive. I would at least suggest the idea to lucid once again.

Who are you to stop them doing what they want. They join to have fun not to be forced to play in a lobby they don't want to and they just want their yellow dots.

If the lobbies do eventually get merged, i think training players that don't want to play gold hearts would continue to do what they do and comp players would play gold hearts. Maybe some training players try out comp, but I don't think it'd be a dramatic change for training only players as long as they can still play what they used to play in training. Basically I think a merge of the lobbies wouldn't really increase competitive playing all that much, it'd probably stay about the same as the transition does now.

Yeah, one lobby with two communities at least would attempt to encourage some sort of integration. That would definitely be the case if they did merge, but it probably won't happen unfortunately unless both communities really wanted it.

Stopping them getting points isn't gonna make them Want to leave their home

There are a ton of pointfarmers in training. People are drawn to points, it's positively reinforcing. No one would bother farming if it wasn't.

Then go talk to them in games....

Forums are better for this sort of thing since you get more thought out comments. I'll go around and ask in games, but most people stick to training because they dislike the comp environment, which largely stems from them not knowing the setups. It's sort of a circular problem that won't end unless there's some more serious changes imo.

Also training games are almost always faster than Comp too so people are gravitated towards the speed of it.
