Training Lobby Change Proposals

over 10 years

Hi training lobby. I haven’t properly introduced myself here but you’ll know TheBrontosaurus well as your lobby owner. One of the things we want to improve on EpicMafia considerably is the harmony and synergy of other lobbies, and give players old and new many different ventures on the site.

One of the stumbling blocks that we have is finding a way to keep training running the way it is, whilst also not making it exploited by point farming with new users who wish to play the game.

I’ve made a thread in competitive which I hope you take time to look at too which has more ideas that can make their way to this lobby, it can be found here.

https://epicmafia.com/topic/63209

So what are the ideas that we have for training?

1) Lobby rename

One issue that’s easy to notice with training is that it has lost its meaning for most of the players in this lobby. We don’t wish to splinter another lobby for new players only, but would like to rename it to something more appropriate. At the moment the leading name is Casual, but I realize that there is an online stigma behind this. If you can think of better names, please let us know.

2) 10K points cap

One of the problems with training is users using it to farm up points. There’s been a lot of aggressive suggestions on how to fix this, one method we had very long ago was forcing people to join comp lobby once they reached a certain threshold. We do not want that to happen again, but we also do not want point farming by playing with newer users.

What does this mean if implemented? It means that once you reach 10000 points in Training/New name pending, you won’t earn more points for future wins you have. We think this is a generous amount to deter point-farming, but you are still fully free to play in the lobby unrestricted if you wish. Stats and other achievements will still be viable and tracked.

3) Greater input with moderators

One bias we notice is how most new moderators are picked from competitive. We realize that most mods have been picked from the comp lobby in the past, however we certainly want to embrace new variation when we look for new moderators in the certain future. If you’re ever interested in being one, feel free to PM an application for it to be reviewed.

Finishing notes

I realize this might look like a forced attempt to boost competitive player numbers. Partially, it is, but I hope you check out the comp thread too if you would like to see more information. There are news ideas in that thread that will be added to training too. Please give any feedback you have, thanks again.

I think as long as I can play unranked in Training, I'm OK with this.

i want to just add something: i went into acomp game and a bunch of training players were there, and, someone who i guess plays comp a lot comes in and says, "this is a bad table." that was really uncalled for and i know it's happened to some other people as well. comp is so rude

I don't think its fair to label a group of people as "rude" because of a few people. Given that the attitude there might be less laid back, but if they think that the table is bad you should ask them to leave the table instead of complaining for the remainder of the game.

this isn't the *first* time it happened. everyone left because of how discouraged they felt, i'm just saying, that was enough to put me off comp for good.

... This is just too stupid! The more I think about this the silliest it gets!!
As long as we have the "Competitive Lobby" with the same structure and same main-player-base, this won't end up well for the site.

If I'm playing in training It means I want to have fun playing, it doesn't mean I want to play a game an hour long with people pushing on me asking me for reasons behind everything I did.

Also this has to be said that playing classic/FP/Coco's/G&H against people with 300 games isn't much easier than playing against people with 3K games. When people learn the basics, It'll be all the same for everyone. However if you don't want to have experienced players play against people with let's say 30 games, just make the "Intermediate Lobby" and put a 100 games limitation for entering the lobby.

LOL, maybe you forgot that we are also humans and we should be able to choose whether or not we want to play in certain places with certain people.
And I don't see how anyone needs to be stopped from gaining points by winning games in training. Playing in training =/= pointfarming!! I'm sorry but I think this is only being suggested to get more people to play in comp.

All training players should be funneled into comp.

Yeah, open mentoring games with people in the program is great, it's just tough to put together.

Anyway we can discuss this elsewhere, let's try not to derail this thread too much more.

Mentoring Lobby got de-stickied. It was really tough to schedule things there unfortunately so it didn't get used much. We can still use it, but we've proven that bringing together enough people at once to teach is really difficult, especially when a lot of the mentors are mods and mentees aren't always as active as we'd expect.

True. I hosted a password locked game with my mentees today it seemed effective, but i do fear scheduling will be a developing issue.

And thanks man, I'm not looking forward to the 60 hour work weeks, but all that paper will definitely help me find potential future moms ;)

Uhh it'd depend. I think it'd make most sense for it all to happen at once, whatever it is.

Rev I will soon, I drank some super dark coffee earlier and a massive cup of tea so I've been rolling for a while now. I should get to bed soon though.
