Training Lobby Change Proposals

over 10 years

Hi training lobby. I haven’t properly introduced myself here but you’ll know TheBrontosaurus well as your lobby owner. One of the things we want to improve on EpicMafia considerably is the harmony and synergy of other lobbies, and give players old and new many different ventures on the site.

One of the stumbling blocks that we have is finding a way to keep training running the way it is, whilst also not making it exploited by point farming with new users who wish to play the game.

I’ve made a thread in competitive which I hope you take time to look at too which has more ideas that can make their way to this lobby, it can be found here.

https://epicmafia.com/topic/63209

So what are the ideas that we have for training?

1) Lobby rename

One issue that’s easy to notice with training is that it has lost its meaning for most of the players in this lobby. We don’t wish to splinter another lobby for new players only, but would like to rename it to something more appropriate. At the moment the leading name is Casual, but I realize that there is an online stigma behind this. If you can think of better names, please let us know.

2) 10K points cap

One of the problems with training is users using it to farm up points. There’s been a lot of aggressive suggestions on how to fix this, one method we had very long ago was forcing people to join comp lobby once they reached a certain threshold. We do not want that to happen again, but we also do not want point farming by playing with newer users.

What does this mean if implemented? It means that once you reach 10000 points in Training/New name pending, you won’t earn more points for future wins you have. We think this is a generous amount to deter point-farming, but you are still fully free to play in the lobby unrestricted if you wish. Stats and other achievements will still be viable and tracked.

3) Greater input with moderators

One bias we notice is how most new moderators are picked from competitive. We realize that most mods have been picked from the comp lobby in the past, however we certainly want to embrace new variation when we look for new moderators in the certain future. If you’re ever interested in being one, feel free to PM an application for it to be reviewed.

Finishing notes

I realize this might look like a forced attempt to boost competitive player numbers. Partially, it is, but I hope you check out the comp thread too if you would like to see more information. There are news ideas in that thread that will be added to training too. Please give any feedback you have, thanks again.

Personally, the big majority of the comp lobby has this false assumption I'm an old troll from way back or they just think I suck, and I don't want to see those people on an everyday basis. I'd rather keep them behind the competitive lobby banner and away from me.

or here's the best one: "He's a vivor ***"

What would be wrong with a merge, happy? Red hearts would be roughly the same as they are now, after all. I understand your concerns about the OP suggestions but I don't see why anyone would be so against deleting competitive

Idk, maybe its personal experience or something but I tried to make the jump into comp lobby with like 12k points, around that area, and I got there, the first impressions was kinda cool, you know, all these weird roles, and then, the caps lock yelling and all that *** started.

It's not fun...

I mean like, isn't the point of playing to be fun. It's why I go on this website, to play fun stuff, and not serious stuff, I'm not getting payed to play boring, frustrating setups, I don't go into the survivor lobby and host 6 hour long games because I dislike it, I do the stuff I like on this website

For example, hosting giant *** survivor games, or playing those simple setups I just saw you put down, me personally, I like to do other stuff while playing these simple setups, like checking my e-mail, the weather, espn, roaming reddit, playing my xbox, but I can't do that, with the comp mentality.

I guess what I'm saying is, a merge is a bad idea, why not just rename the 2 lobbies, standard and advanced or w/e, and keep them the way it is, its fine the way it is, maybe if the comp lobby would lighten up on a lot of stuff it would be a lot better, is what I'm saying.

tl:dr I gave a personal story, and said I'd rather have fun playing the game than be frustrated for playing something I don't like, oh, and go check out vivor lobby! lmfao

and has anyone thought of the fact that maybe these training lobby players will just jump into your precious perfect little lobby and just spam it with the overly simplistic setups that you all are trying to stop us from playing by graduating into "Competitions".

yes someone HAS thought of that fact and posted about it on a previous page! :]

Player A reaching 10k points and no longer able to score in training BUT still able to play ranked games.

they can move to competitive lobby and play the same games. and they could also maybe meet some comp players who don't fit the typical comp stereotype and they could you know, join the competition.

You have a really narrow view on what we're discussing. Moving to competitive lobby doesn't mean you HAVE to join the competition, it doesn't mean you HAVE to play those setups. It just means that you move out of the way and let people who actually want to learn and gradually shift into a competitive mindset be mentored, play new setups, and learn.

to be honest, the competitive lobby is full of *** that feel the need to burn any newcomers, anyone that happens to play in OTHER lobbies and the whole lobby is already a clique. Plus the fact that its full of super scumhunting boring as *** setups that require you to try 100% is horribly unfun. I play this game for fun, not to win pixelated trophies playing boring as *** setups.

"They stick around for the easy points"

no, I stick around for 2 reasons.

#1: Its simple, fun, quick, and simply enjoyable to play those setups like guns n hookers and Multi-Classic and Coco's Epic Setup, then randomly that one random setup someone makes.

#2: Your not going to teach anyone how to move on from training lobby if there's no veteran players playing in the lobby. I feel like I'm helping some of the players by helping out in games. (and sometimes being outsmarted by these newcomers)

I guess I have a third one.

#3: Competitive lobby isn't fun, you sit there and wait about 10 minutes for a 8-12 player setup to fill up, whats the fun of that. OH then there's the fact that in the game, those setups are overly complicated and everything has to be done in the most perfect fashion otherwise you'll be suffering the hate of the majority of the comp lobby.

I PREFER SIMPLE, QUICK, AND key word... F-U-N FUN than overly complicated, long as ***, unfun setups.

adapt to the change or leave. your single narrow minded opinion isn't the type of opinion this site needs. Oh you can't play your precious overly simplistic setup to get points, poor you.

As you mentioned earlier, training lobby has 5X more people then the comp lobby.

Given that I am in the majority opinion here, saying adapt or leave essentially means you want a majority of the players on this site to leave.

make a fancy pants lobby or something then...? why do you need to clog training lobby with setups that are overly simplistic, when the training lobby was designed to TRAIN people to move onto competitive lobby. People who have 10k+ points are definitely ready to move on to competitive lobby, but they stick around for the easy points.

I don't think you improve competitive lobby by forcing people to play in it. You need better marketing for it, and maybe for the website in general. Forcing people to play in competitive lobby is mandatory fun. That's never good.

While this theoretical scenario would be rare (someone with 10k points is likely not a troll)

You've clearly never played SITD with me...

TheVigil says

Another question is if these changes happen how much of the player base will we lose?

More than the mods seem the think. We've already lost a lot of players over the last few months (this is why comp now finds itself with not enough players), and I'm sure many are on the edge of leaving now.

I didn't say they weren't competitive? In fact, I was suggesting that anyone who plays for points IS competitive - they want the competitive aspect of games without the stress and negativity of comp lobby.

iirc, the rounds of competition we had in training weren't nearly as brutal nor 'intimidating' as the rounds are in comp lobby. Maybe this was my personal experience?

This, I want casual competition, not the competitive competition of the comp lobby.

Jupiter says

We've already tried to have an intermediate-level lobby. It devolved into people pointfarming Shot in the Dark and just didn't work out. We're just looking to move training players into comp so there isn't as much of a divide between lobbies. If you guys come to comp you'll be playing with each other as much as you'll be playing with the "rude" comp players (which I don't think are very rude at all). A lot of players from other lobbies that come to Comp enjoy it a lot. Uprizzle, someone who's never played in Comp before placed 5th this competitive round and (as far as I know) enjoyed playing there.

That's the thing Jupiter, we don't want to play in competitions, and we don't want to play setups with 11 different roles.

We want to play casual, simplistic set-ups but still get rewards for winning. Why is that so much to ask for?

Well it was sort of designed to be that way where training/comp were one entity where you moved unto the other with time in the first place and then sandbox as the other option so it would pretty much go back to that.

Of course it should be renamed though
over 10 years
i was just thinking, with all the custom lobbies and such, if comp was deleted there would be training and sandbox left as the traditional lobbies, which would make training the only lobby that is accessible to everyone for ranked games. not to mention its p much the main lobby people spend time on. idc what the name is. training seems inapropriate
over 10 years
Although I do prefer the name standard over main a bit. Main makes me think of minesweeper lobby

just delete comp

and rename training to MAIN

then add a comp to main with a point requirement
