Comp Lobby Change Proposals

over 10 years

Hello comp lobby. As some people are discussing, activity has gone down a bit, and yesterday the lobby was delisted from the front page temporarily. As a result of that, we have some new ideas for competitive and training lobby to help revitalize both lobbies in integration and play. It does look likely though that another lobby will replace this placement on the front page if things do not change. I ask that you please review this if you want things to remain as they are now.

If you would like to see the ideas and proposals for training lobby, please view this thread here.

https://epicmafia.com/topic/63210

For now I will hierarchy things that will be done, and those ideas which would be dependent on Lucid and the undertaking work for them.

Main Changes

1) Lobby rename to ‘Ranked’

Having the lobby name as competitive comes off as intimidating for newer players. Whilst competitions are not going anywhere in this lobby, we want to encourage regular play for those who do not want to influence running competitions.

2) Lower point requirement for entry lowered to 500.

Having an entry amount of 1500 is a very large asking score for someone new to the game. By that time they have either settled down in one lobby with no opinion on moving, or even trying out another lobby. I realize this might lead to more reports being done in comp, but I don’t think it’ll hugely influence the amount of reports that have to be done on average that we have now. Existing limits such as new accounts not being able to participate in current trophy rounds won’t be removed.

Future Changes Pending Feedback

1) Greater new range of achievements.

Not everyone wants to play EpicMafia for trophies, but one thing that I’ve learnt is that lots of people enjoy the stat tracking and trying to get achievements. I feel going into every game with the chance to have a reward or unlock would be great, and we can possibly encourage lobby specifics achievements too.

One example I’d like to see with achievements is a much greater range of unlocks. Let’s take the current hunter achievement which requires you to shoot the mafia in 3 way. This isn’t achievable for everyone, but we can make this achievement accessible for all in some way by having levels without downgrading existing criteria.

Here’s an example

*Level 1: Hit the mafia as Hunter

*Level 2: Hit the mafia 10 times as Hunter

*Level 3 (Ranked Exclusive): Hit the mafia in 3 way as Hunter.

Earning an achievement can gain a small emblem, completing the complete range of achievements can earn a badge.

2) Cycling ‘Assignments’ and challenges

Moving back to the topic of not everyone wanting to run for a trophy, or not having the time to do so, having mini competitions known as assignments could be a new, fun aspect that some players might want to participate in. Like happy hours, imagine having weekly challenges such as who can have the most wins as a particular role, or who can achieve the most cop guilty reports in a week. This can keep things fresh and make achieving more accessible.

3) More community consultation on setups and these new ideas

Having submitted achievements and assignments be as easy as submitting new roles for the game would be brilliant if possible. One problem comp has is autonomy, there’s too much interjection with many actions and not many ways for viewpoints to influence the site.

Concluding notes

We’re fully welcoming in embracing ideas for what might help this lobby thrive, so please rate or give your own for consideration. Thanks guys.

This idea is the closest you're going to get to it, I've been working this out and talking with Lucid to reunify as much as possible. You have three options, this idea, a dead and delisted lobby, or all of you moving to training with no changes for that lobby.

You do realize that if you decide to destroy whatever is left of competitive with option 2 or 3 then it'll only repel players

Do you think option 2 is my decision Matt?

Isn't option 3 the unified lobby idea you're looking for?

I guess my options have been reduced to a forced submission

I'm trying to find the threat where I mentioned the idea of bringing roles like ninja into the training lobby. Wish me luck.

Yeah, idk if point count matters to people unless it is in comp. I just see it as how many games someone has played on EM, unless they are using it to run for something. Something that might be used for encouragement is to just keep track of a player's daily point count and post it up like the rankings we have for comp. So if a player does a good 7/10 for the day or something like that, there will be a board saying they they earned ~420 points for playing and will get known for doing so. This way the points will look like they have meaning.

Other ideas we could do is to reference create your own setup more. Seeing both JAtW and err0r's Stalker of the Samurai Temple (SST) both get a lot of play when experienced players were in the lobby to teach the mechanics, I think trying to push the players into that idea would bring idea of better play with knowing roles, and more of a reason to move to comp. This is similar with the idea I gave before with moving roles like ninja and similar. People need to learn that the idea of this site is more for the variety of roles, and not the classic 1 cop, 1 doc, x maf, y blue.

I just looked over at the training lobby page and saw a mortician game https://epicmafia.com/setup/1092782 (which I don't know if this is actually something or not as they keep on making it from scratch rather than making a titled one). You see Dethy which wasn't there until we put all the cops on there. CES is an okay setup as it uses Jailer, though I think there are other things we can use with it from there. JvG, which I see is made by the same person who made JAtW. SitD is still a good setup if people actually play it for the mechanics and it wasn't a point farm.

These things will introduce roles without the fear of the orange heart. It will teach mechanics, and give more incentive to move between the lobbies.

Implement the lobbies back into one. It's the ideal solution. Nothing was broken beforehand. We've convinced ourselves that the separation has heightened game-play when it's only become a crutch.

For those asking for a single lobby, this is the closest you're going to have. It keeps training for training (or if you want to look at it from the original old standpoint, 10 unranked games before ranked), and has what is to be ranked for regular ranked games and unranked games.

I gave the options at the top page, if comp goes, so does competitions, there would only be ranked games to progress onto the HoF. This idea is to keep competitions going in a main lobby environment, which would also include standard ranked games, and other ideas to add more attraction and variation.

point payout thing is fine because it does not make a difference. people are noob even at 10k points.

please dont change the name, because the name competitive lobby is stuck in our minds as the COMP lobby which is too dear to us.

for people to jump between the two lobbies, i have amazing ideas to make that happen. ideas that will guarantee 100% conversion. each training lobby player will come to comp lobby and stick to it. NIKKI please pm me if you want to discuss about those ideas. i understand the training lobby mentality and how difficult it is to make that transitiion and to unlearn the things done in training lobby. i know how to make it easy for them and how to help them enjoy it. all we will need is a simple announcement from you. just pm me so we can discuss it.

weekly challenges is a great idea, but you should add something more interesting and competitive in it. role specific things are easier and are not that appreciated. what would be appreciated is people having mini competitions on a particular setup. you can have that for red hearts. that would encourage more training players to play it as it will look achievable. the structure would be- one red heart setup each day. the person with the most points out of it gets on the hof or something. you can name it something cool that sounds like an achievement of a ranger or a man on a hunt.

Yeah, it's a shame that the two lobbies are so stratified and that people hardly jump between the two.

Lucid's shot down the idea many times, but if he's ok with it now, sweet

IIRC, someone proposed this to him when he enabled rounds for all lobbies and he said "it's too late now", but things could change. I'd have to talk to him about it.

I don't think so. He got coaxed into it mostly with majority vote and a huge-*** thread probably like 111 pages.

Lucid should give it a chance, much like he gave a tiered lobby system a chance in the first place.

Was he originally against the idea?

Wish we still had the old forums so I could read up on it.

Lucid told me that he could build extra barriers from competition within a lobby for that sort of thing (ie point requirements that are different for lobby access and competition access), so it could work if we went that route. It'd depend on if he was willing to merge them.

And yeah, exactly what I'd want to encourage. Even if I had gold hearts, it'd be nice to play a game of a non-comped setup every once in a while. It'd be a great way to teach new people too since it's lower stress.

That's honestly a good idea bronto, when people ran out of hearts back in the day, they would join other ranked games that didn't count towards the competition, which still meant the newer users who weren't aware of it still got to play with people that weren't at their level. Training is such a terrible name for a lobby where nothing is being learned, and I think we can all agree on that.

KyIe says

the reason people overlook a lot is that competitive lobby is dead for morning to early afternoon est, and even when its active games take a while to fill. the lobby being so dead in the first place is why a lot of people don't care enough to wait for games.

Yeah, unfortunately Sandbox and Training are the only places that have setups fill consistently. But even in training if you host anything outside the box it struggles to fill.
deletedover 10 years
yeah everything is sgrs fault at the end of the day.
over 10 years

Retti says

The reason competitive is so dead now is because training has no reason or incentive to play in it. They are either too frightened to move outside of training or simply do not care enough to try and get into competition. This problem is not inherently competitive, rather it is how the lobbies are currently set up.

I very much doubt that this will make an enormous impact in the end but I digress, I like the ideas on paper and It's better than what we have now.

Single lobby would completely fix all of this though, just saying.

Single Lobby with tiers within the lobby I think is the best solution

~10 unranked games to get access to red hearts.
2000 points in red hearts to get access to gold hearts

Numbers are just pulled out of thin air, but I think having it all laid out in front of them would encourage people to try new things, and tables would fill faster too. Picking up good habits from exposure to more experienced players would happen more often too.

This is a good start though, and I think this could make some positive impact.
