Why we shouldn't use the R-word

deletedover 8 years

"Do not call something you don't like "Redacted". By calling something "Redacted", you are essentially saying an undesirable object or event is the same as someone with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities. This invalidates feelings and the identities of people with disabilities and puts them in a position where they are used to describe something that is considered to be flawed, useless, or stupid. It also makes YOU look flawed, useless and stupid by using such an uncool term. There are a ton of great words you can use instead to describe things, people, and situations that anger or annoy you.

For example: If something is a bad idea, you can use words such as dense, useless, obtuse, pathetic, or vapid. Don't forget terms like jackass or bonehead. Or make up snappy new insults. Swearing may be okay, but might make you look less impressive.

If someone or something angers you, use words like contemptible, enraging, evil, infuriating, horrible, irrational, rage-inducing. If someone or something is disgusting, try using nasty, gross, foul, nauseating, skeevy, repellent, repulsive, vomitous or terrible instead."

"The historical context of the word is important to know. People with disabilities have been treated poorly, discriminated against, abused, and neglected in the past and even today. Just changing the way you speak and avoiding using the term can make a difference for people with disabilities today and in the future."

"…support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities."

There you go, I think this was a reply from me when I asked about whether context could play a key. He takes it really seriously. I censored it for your eyes.

One of my long-time pals has a t-shirt with "Spread the word to end the word" on it, strongly advocates for the removal of the word from everyone's vocabulary but then he turns around and is a douche without slurs lol

The only thing I ever get from these things is that the r-word is "offensive" or "derogatory" or blah blah blah but a lot of the time people advocating to "end the word" are people who are equally offensive or derogatory but without using slurs.

I obviously don't agree with using any slur at all because that's dumb and people shouldn't be annoying but if you're going to preach about being offensive, then stop being offensive in all aspects of your personality

I'll say that it's hypocrite for those including myself who say we wouldn't use r word in front of people with disabilities because we basically believe it to be an offensive term.

However, if you're going to say that it is HC, you might as well as vio people when they use words like "idiot", "moron", "dumb" because they are ablest slurs and were actually medically terms & offensive back then

I tend to jokingly call my friends these words because I know they wouldn't get offensive. I don't think it's hard not to use the word around people who find it offensive. That's literally the only solution you can think of.

i'm surprised that you managed to type out the worst post after giga posted itt

that's why hc fails so much, ppl literally are mocking the system and just want the person to get a vio

Get this unpopular opinion:

I think most adults on this website are actually strong enough people that they *gasp* arent actually offended by a slur on epicmafiadotcom.

If anything, the whole stigma that every mentally handicapped person is "weak" and need the help of the valiant moderators to censor every bad word that might hurt them is infantilizing in itself and quite prejudice, but thats just my opinion.

Im quoting this wonderfull post again

I mean, it seems like he, or mods, care even more about HC than they do censor bypasses of plain old curse words anyways

He's compiling code, not a dictionary.

He basically had LaurieRose add a dictionary anyways so what's the point of not doing it for HC too
