Why we shouldn't use the R-word

deletedalmost 10 years

"Do not call something you don't like "Redacted". By calling something "Redacted", you are essentially saying an undesirable object or event is the same as someone with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities. This invalidates feelings and the identities of people with disabilities and puts them in a position where they are used to describe something that is considered to be flawed, useless, or stupid. It also makes YOU look flawed, useless and stupid by using such an uncool term. There are a ton of great words you can use instead to describe things, people, and situations that anger or annoy you.

For example: If something is a bad idea, you can use words such as dense, useless, obtuse, pathetic, or vapid. Don't forget terms like jackass or bonehead. Or make up snappy new insults. Swearing may be okay, but might make you look less impressive.

If someone or something angers you, use words like contemptible, enraging, evil, infuriating, horrible, irrational, rage-inducing. If someone or something is disgusting, try using nasty, gross, foul, nauseating, skeevy, repellent, repulsive, vomitous or terrible instead."

"The historical context of the word is important to know. People with disabilities have been treated poorly, discriminated against, abused, and neglected in the past and even today. Just changing the way you speak and avoiding using the term can make a difference for people with disabilities today and in the future."

"…support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities."

Autism, on the other hand, is a social disability and often a side effect of excessive intelligence. Autistic savants, etc., etc.

Like, call someone socially inept while you're playing on EPICMAFIA, will ya? And make sure to show how much MORE EDUCATED AND INTELLIGENT you are than them by using "autist" to mean "idiot"

Bonehead is actually funny and original. I think I'll keep that. Like, I think I've ever heard it before, but...... lol

And I was gonna leave this up to interpretation, but just now I was referring to actual "redacted" and not [redacted]. ;)

When someone uses a word like "redacted", the speaker isn't specifically targeting those who are mentally challenged.

In the context of EpicMafia, "redacted" is just used as a snappy catch-all insult like "bonehead" or "moron". Only that it's slightly less PG.

Thanks you answered your own question.

vacuous isn't in the list. You may change that word for "dense" and note that I was aware I was using synonyms repeatedly in the same sentence with reference to teh same thing but i forgot waht that's called or if it has a name. i'm such a BONEHEAD

I don't get why it's acceptable to use insults like "moron" but not "redacted".

They're both just essentially words that are used in a derogatory manner, but I've never seen someone being reported because the user was butthurt they was called a moron.

Calling someone a "redacted" is much more satisfying than calling one a "bonehead". Using more politically correct terms do not have the same appeal and aren't as snappy.

Words are words. If you're going to be that offended by what a stranger calls you on the internet you probably shouldn't be on EpicMafia. The word "redacted" certainly should NOT be censored.

Gira, you must be somewhat obtuse if you were aware that Koby Bryant was a rapist when Bumpers made the analogy and still able to sincerely make such a vacuous post without realizing that was the point of Bumpers' foul comparison........ just kidding.

Lol, that's rage-inducing.

It's just so skeevy to think that no one will EVER use the term "rage-inducing" because it takes 0 intellect to see why that's pathetic.

if you want to "promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities" then do that. acting like individual words are fully representative of those values isn't gonna change anything. this sort of argument is only ever gonna be divisive because you're promoting the idea that people who say The R Word are inherently intolerant

buddy this is EM, acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities is pretty much a given

I REALLY prefer "redacted." It's the snappiest new catch-all insult you could have created.

Using literary or archaic terms isn't always the best way to get a sharp point through a thick wall. I would know, as an expert knife enthusiast slash pointer at things or some other impressive profession/hobby,

I don't know why I tl;dr'd about that but I really don't understand why redacted is such an important thing to people here one way or the other because I've never heard of anyone hearing of anyone actually diagnosed with mental retardation who went on epicmafia and took offense to that phenomenon that is totally ingrained in the community anyway for whatever reason.

if anyone who is mentally ever has or does in the future complain about the use of "redacted" to mean stupid I will personally finish becoming a l33t computer h4xx0r and completely revamp my ethics code to become the unlawful kind and take down epicmafia permanently.

as it stands, I don't think a lot of mentally redacted people that also happen to be thin-skinned and/or actually have PTSD because of horrible ableist scumbags so the point seems moot to me.

That's not to say the epicmafia userbase is intelligent or that using redacted and "autist" as insults is good in general. I'm just saying that I don't have anything to say....

except that autist is the stupidest insult ever. can we talk about that instead?
