Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?

also, don't dorm with friends, it ruins friendships, especially if you guys are polar opposites in living styles.

That's not necessarily the case, I've known my roommate before college and being in the same room has only strengthened our friendship.

Anyway, I agree with people who have posted here saying that dorm life has to be experienced and is, in my opinion, something invaluable. I was living in an apartment during my first year and now am in dorm during my second, and enjoy it much much more. It gives great opportunities to meet new people, although, it can kinda badly affect your studies if you just start having fun which is kinda easy at a dorm.

i'm staying home for college. i figure it'd be a lot easier for me and plus i'd rather save the funds since i'm most likely going for a phd.

I had the choice to live on res or stay home and I chose to stay home because I'm a 32 yo basement-dwelling creep (I live in my own room in the basement)

But the real reason I chose to stay home was to 1. Be more focused in classes (I didn't know how hard first year would be/didn't want distractions) and 2. To save my parents their moola

Do I regret my choice? Only when my parents are upset at me and stuff (so no) but I go to university in Toronto anyway so it would be a waste of money

Also, my #1 choice of all the places I applied to is a 10min drive from my house and I got accepted. and I get the Pan-Am games centre for free and some other things, so it's nice to be home although the res life would be alright too

Think about what YOU want; you're the one going to school.

alright so i'll answer matt's initial question now. really don't expect university to be anything like what any of us are saying. It's a really really individualized experience and that's one of the great things about it. It is what you want it to be. If you want it to be a drug fueled sexcapade, let it be that. if you want it to be strictly academic, by all means. just focus on the aspects you want it to be and that's how it'll be. Don't lose sight of why you're there, and just enjoy it.

Awww wow, yeah, I commute from home so I don't have that issue. I feel like going away to a school where you know basically no one would be pretty scary. :{

first semester sucks. don't give up though it gets better with time

It depends on where you are in life. For me, first semester gave me so much opportunity. After being homeschooled for a long time, I was finally able to try super hard in school and see if it paid off. Since I was feeling borderline depressed through the summer, putting all my time into Chemistry really brought me out of that downtime. Like, it's amazing what just keeping yourself busy can do to you if you're in a slight depression or w/e.

See, I was the opposite. I'm from NY and an only child at that so I had never really been away from my parents. I also chose a school thousands of miles away in SC. Being that far away from home was a shock to me that caused me to be really depressed. I almost gave up but in time, got used to it and I'm glad I stuck it out.

a friend of mine got a six figure a year job at a law firm in chicago by talking about the white sox for 30 minutes during his interview. a lot of stuff matters in the real world that you wouldn't expect

exactly, i realized at my last job that people are a little irrational about hiring and will oftentimes go for someone they can relate to rather than someone qualified, which is why some organizations tend to be dominated by a specific ethnic group or people who are from the same area.

I remember interviewing someone at my last job who was perfect for the job in terms of experience, but my boss didn't like that she didn't drink (not religious, just personal reasons), and the company did meetings with beer every other week so they turned her down. It's crazy how little stuff can have such big impact.

I'm pretty sure I got that job because I was able to speak Mandarin with my boss, who had been to Taiwan and knew a bit of it. You just want to be able to connect with the interviewer in any way you can. They're much more willing to train you if they think you're a cool guy.
