Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?

YOLO.
Find out what your passion is, do what you love, love what you do. Don't obsses over job prospects.
They say those whose passion lines up with their profession are the most fortunate people on planet.
Majoring in Criminology and I LOVE IT!

Enjoy being unemployed and up to your neck in debt after graduation. I'm currently living that lifestyle.

Yeah, the YOLO guy is the right guy to take advice from.

Thank you all again~ Sincerely helpful.

I'll be able to visit my girlfriend Nicole (aka appleofmyeye) like every single weekend so as far as the romance department goes, I'm not worried!

Genuine question though, what did you guys initially do to make friends? It sounds like the freshman year is very important for establishing social groups.

Also, I've convinced myself that a professional writing major isn't a bad idea, but if someone wants to slap me over the head with the reality of my future unemployment or something then feel free to do so

okay, i'm gonna throw it at you. Do. not. worry. about. your. major. Do what you love to do. If you're stuck in a major that you hate, your college experience is gonna suffer. If you're doing something you love, the learning part and class part of college will be much easier than if you are stuck doing something you hate. I'm a musical theatre major. I'm in like one legit class. And I'm super happy with it. I don't listen to the people who tell me I won't find a job after college. You'll figure out something to do with your major!! Professional writing sounds great :D

Isn't psych the least employable major right now

It's been on the way out since the APA disbanded

Based on your diction and the country you live in I'd wager you have more writing experience than 99% of America.

Yeah, very good ideas. I was planning on working at the writing center as well as helping with student magazines/etc etc so I can get in a lot of experience with editing and managing stuff.

yes! Do it earlier rather than later though.

My brother did Psychology, and he lucked out and got a job in his field of interest, but that does not happen to the average person.

Psych is really fun as a hobby to learn.

As a career choice I would not recommend it

Actually yes, that job sounds like something that would be right up my alley. I wonder if a writing major would give me a good chance of getting that or not.

it would man, but you should look into that kind of stuff early on, get onto your school paper staff, become an editor for that, maybe get some certifications for different types of editing (i.e. for that job you need ELS; Editor in the Life Sciences certification) so maybe look into those things.

You consider forensic psych?

I find it very interesting, but to my understanding I would need to pursue a PHD to get a good job involving it.

Also Satan, I'm pretty bad at science, not gonna lie.

I've been job hunting for the past few weeks and stumbled upon this job: http://prntscr.com/6fz9b4 sound interesting at all? or nah? I mean, it helps to find jobs you want to do and look at their qualifications to see what you would need for them.

Also Alt, I'll look into it more, thank you! I do enjoy Psychology a lot so it's a potential major for me.

You can get a decent paying job with a B.A until you're able to aim for a Ph.D. You should check it out more carefully; there are a lot more options for preliminary crime-psych work than just general psych.

What the heck is a professional writing major anyways? If you like the English language so much just be an English major lol.

English/Writing is the thing that I'm good at, but I want a job! I've been -told- that writing will get me good jobs but I'm suspicious of those claims.

Good doesn't necessarily mean stable/solid. It's risky to rely on abstract things like writing as a career choice.

Hm well, I agree and that's why I was partially avoiding an English major. I was going into writing because again, I was told that it had actual job security but you are correct that it might be totally wrong. I'm going to talk to a bunch of people that are involved in it and figure that out.

I love psychology, but I would most likely need to get a PHD and that isn't really something I can afford to do.

if you like writing, science is a good field because you will have to write dozens and dozens of papers. I can show you some examples if interested

Do yourself a favor and ignore everyone who commented in this thread about their College experience because none of these posts have any advice, it's just a rant about what they did and didn't do - You'll have a way better time avoiding the guidelines and just doing what you feel like.

I think it depends on what state you live in. Psychology is fun!
And it depends on where you get your degree from too.

Matt also know that just because you got into your school, you still have to keep an average GPA (depending on the major) and the head of the department can also determine that you are not a fit for that major.

Psychology will bore you to tears, it's a lot less fun than you think it is. Take history classes.

It doesn't have near as much to do with the capability and quality of your writing as it does in regards to what place and the kind of job you'll be doing at that place. There's a lot of trashy writers out there and Matt could be another one without problem, the real issue is getting lucky enough to make it work out over a longer period of time; people get bored of you.

If you're good enough to be kept around you might realize you don't like the time and place you're stuck in, but it's a bigger struggle than most career-choices to flip jobs related to writing.
