Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?

Have you thought of being and English teacher? Or maybe major in journalism/communications. That is still a writing intensive major! That might help broadening up future jobs.

A good back up major is Psychology IMO. Being a psych major you spend a lot of time writing papers, thesis, and even developing your own theories!

You guys are hilarious. It's like you think you have to be a professional writer with an undergrad degree in English or be homeless, one or the other.

Dream small and major in something that will get you a good 9-5, even though you can go to law school with a degree in Animal Poop

"there is actually a strong market at the moment for professional writing majors to go into a variety of companies for publications/magazines"

It's not.

I feel like if you want to be a successful writer, then you have to be REALLY good, otherwise it will be pretty hard to get your career started. Don't want to see you stuck working at a Walmart the rest of your life with an English degree until you get noticed as a writer

What the heck is a professional writing major anyways? If you like the English language so much just be an English major lol.

English/Writing is the thing that I'm good at, but I want a job! I've been -told- that writing will get me good jobs but I'm suspicious of those claims.

Good doesn't necessarily mean stable/solid. It's risky to rely on abstract things like writing as a career choice.

@projectmatt: what college did you decide to attend? I'm currently reviewing all my acceptance letters and will also soon make a decision in the coming weeks.

I applied to schools mostly on the west coast: everywhere from San Diego to Portland to Seattle. I'm planning on either Pre-pharmacy or Environmental Science but we'll see how that turns out :PPP

Go to Temple University for Pre Pharmacy!!!! They have such a nice program!!

It'd be cool to meet up with some EM friends irl ^_^ but I'm sorry I didn't apply

Thank you all again~ Sincerely helpful.

I'll be able to visit my girlfriend Nicole (aka appleofmyeye) like every single weekend so as far as the romance department goes, I'm not worried!

Genuine question though, what did you guys initially do to make friends? It sounds like the freshman year is very important for establishing social groups.

Also, I've convinced myself that a professional writing major isn't a bad idea, but if someone wants to slap me over the head with the reality of my future unemployment or something then feel free to do so

While I was still in high school I joined the Ship Girls 2012 facebook page lol and I started talking to girls there. Then when I moved in I knew like 8 people plus the two girls from my HS (including my best friend). The whole first week we left our dorm room open for anyone to walk in while we were in there of course.

Let me say this. Who hires professional writing majors because I don't know

Well, I've been told that a professional writing major is essentially an English major but with more job security. You have the opportunity to have a ton of internships. According to the people that I asked at the college, there is actually a strong market at the moment for professional writing majors to go into a variety of companies for publications/magazines etc etc. I also think that since I have a job as a writer at the moment and would work at the Writing Center my resume would be good.

There is the possibility that I am deluded though, in which case I will change my major. I'm gonna talk to a college advisor/other alumni who graduated with that major to see how strong of a major it is.

Brownpimp007 has been paying me to write articles for him and I don't even have a degree yet. I would imagine that there is a whole internet out there in need of writers.

Let me say this. If you were hiring, would you hire a professional writing major, or someone with an actually useful degree

I do not remember what I was going to type. As I am still in College and really dont give a flying 747 fucck anymore and I am pretty fuckking wasted......... but... Find a few girls you like. Because by Winter Time girls will turtle up and stay with their Fucck buddies and close friends... Be one of those. You will be Golden! Trust ME! It's weird you might think, but I honestly feel it is human nature. It's an Evolutionary advantage we have as humans. Go With It!

Also bring the N64. Don't listen to these fuckks who say the dorms are awkward. No your first year or even 2 years. They are AWESOME! ESTABLISH THOSE RELATIONSHIPS! because when you move into an apartment you still have those hookups. Trust Me! Dorms are so key for stability! Do not be the guy who just stays in his room. Talk to women and if you are interested in men talk to them. Fuuck it. Its College. Experience Life! Its Whatever. people are not going to judge you like High School. Enjoy yourself!

Go to classes. When you're not in classes, go to groups that interest you. Find friends at these groups. Promptly proceed to stop participating in these groups once you hang out with these friends regularly after classes.

Drink booze, smoke weed, do psychedelics, and stay safe.

That'll pretty much do it.
