Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?
Find out what you want to study early; try lots of things and don't kid yourself. Just because you feel like you "should" take a certain degree doesn't mean you actually should. If it isn't your thing, decide early, and find something new that you both love and are good at. A lot of people don't use their degrees in their professions, but it's great if you can.
Make friends that you can trust, ones that'll keep you out of trouble unless you can afford a little trouble. Don't be too proud to get a tutor, especially if it's free/included in tuition. They help a ton.
If you plan to live on campus (aka you don't live close by and don't want to live with your parents), take lots of vitamins and take care of yourself; when one person gets sick, everyone with a low immune system (aka most college kids) gets sick. Also try to make friends with your professors if they seem cool and nice and interesting to talk to.
I'm sure there's more but uh. Tbh. Don't date your first semester, either. It just complicates junk and you don't need that while you're still getting used to things. It isn't hard to get settled in, but you shouldn't make it hard for yourself, either. And best of luck!
ITS HELL. IT IS HELL. HOPE THAT YOUR ROOMMATE LEAVES THE ROOM OTHER THAN JUST CLASS. DON'T SKIP CLASS UNLESS ITS A GOOD TIME. DONT SKIP MEALS. FRESHMAN 15 IS A REAL THING
i honestly lucked out with my roommate. we were randomly paired and we're both tidy and we don't touch each other's sh*t. plus we get along pretty well.
and yeah there's no reason to spend 4 years (or however long) miserable
i'm not even ashamed to admit that i haven't washed my clothes in a month because it costs money and there's nobody around me to be bothered by it
i'm actually pretty depressed here and i can't just transfer so i'm considering dropping out, getting a full time job and going travelling as soon as i can afford it

If you're living in dorms don't room with a friend and try to find someone sane and clean. The "best" rooms are ground floor so you don't have to walk up and down stairs every time you go anywhere/moving your stuff in and also try to get a room as close as you can to the laundry rooms since it's a giant pain in the - but don't get a room directly next to them so people washing stuff at 4am keeps you up.
it can be a lot of work but the sense of impending doom means that even on big campuses there's a feeling of community which is nice. if you can live on campus, do it. you're less likely to skip class, and you're right there if there's something on campus going on like clubs or sports. be prepared for sh*tty food though.

i'm going to update this thread many months later because i'm procrastinating doing homework.
college is actually freaking awesome, and although i had a bit of a rough start things gradually improved and i'm now at a spot where things are pretty wonderful. mainly because i'm involved with all the nerdy musical stuff.
also believe it or not, some of the advice in this thread i actually took to heart and found pretty helpful, so thank you!
