Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?

Update: I am about 6 days into college, and it is kind of awesome. I've met a ton of different people who are incredibly wonderful and am getting involved with a bunch of clubs. I was told that the first semester sucks, but it kind of rules. Freedom!

Hell yeah. Smoke some god damned weed

Imo, you should aim for 3.5 GPA and it really isnt that hard to get if you at least study a lot for the exams. Have fun but dont waste your time either.

College is taken really seriously by college students but is a complete joke to college graduates. Don't take anything too seriously/. Have fun and try out different things and try out being different people. 2.5 GPA and 3.5 GPA are basically equivalent to employers; only matters if you stay in academia, which is a bad idea.

This school is about a 50/50 split. I think it has about 8,000 students and 4,000 living in dorms.

it depends on what school you go to. i went to a mostly commuter school for my first year of college and i only remember 1 person who said they dormed.

I think it's hard to make generalizations like that. It really depends where the college is located, what kind of college it is (big/small), things like that. I went to a small school in Niagara Falls and it was probably 60/40 for living on campus and commuting.

See, I'd say it's closer to 80/20 here. I know bugger all people that live in campus housing.

Everyone's experience is different, just make the most of it! You'll do great. Be smart, be humble, but still enjoy yourself!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have no clue what I'm gonna do when I get there other than join the clubs that look fun to me and hopefully make friends. Nervous but excited!

Markus and I live in NZ, and most people are living at home, or flatting in the same city as their parents.

Enrol in a hall of residence. That is the biggest favour you can do yourself. Make an effort to make friends. Go out when everyone else is going out. Enjoy first year as it is designed entirely for you to come out of your shell and have fun.

He's American dude, almost none of them live at home while studying.

Also, I just chilled out for all three years of undergrad, it was great.

As for advice: go to every class. That's all. Lectures are skippable, but don't do it until second year, b/c that's when you'll know what you're able to skip. Never miss one of the tutorials/seminars/workshops - those discussion based classes. Those are what will get you a pass, & do your assignments the night before to maximise free time.

It 100% is. If there is any year you can just worry about enjoying yourself, it's first year university. Obviously don't neglect your studies entirely, but you will regret not embracing the social aspect later on.

I enjoyed myself immensely first year. I also had almost a perfect gpa :P It's different for everyone, I suppose.

^ no it's not lol. Of course go out and have fun of course, but I've witnessed people flame out of school first year because they embraced the social aspect too much. It's not just a mess-around year.

+1. Fair warning.

This was almost me. I wound up on every type of probation you can get on at a university.

I do college on the internet, so I can waste money towards my future in the comfort of my own home
