Okay so, I officially committed to a college today. I'll be going there in the fall. A majority of my knowledge about college comes from stuff that I've seen in TV shows, movies and have heard from random people. For those of you who are actually enrolled in a university right now, how is it like and what should I expect?

Matt reality is always worse than expectations. Don't get your hopes up, bubba. Just my two cents.

don't stress too much.

Your daily life doesn't change unless you join clubs. The size of your college is likely the size of a small city. Once you get into classes just for your major you will find a circle of friends you'll see every semester that share similar interests. Also, join clubs and have a life. College studying has a limit. If you go into a gym be ready for it to be packed with a lot of people just lifting all the damn time.

you might think of it as similar to going outside.

you're in for a huge lifestyle shock!

That's because you haven't been around. Connor had a similar thread.

i'm still convinced this was a troll thread

Or: Ensure that whatever you're "investing" into your study will have a return that's equal or greater, otherwise what's the point.

Find a career, something you love so you never have to "work". Short of that, ensure your study will result in a career and make it your sole purpose.

There are people on this site that can tell you how much is sucks to go to school and not have degree related work or ability to make use of a degree short of that.

i'm off to bed but if anyone has any other good words of advice i'll be sure to check it out tomorrow. thanks guys!!

I don't think you should really take advice on "what to do" or "how to do them" because you'll be limiting yourself and focusing on doing things the way you're told and it's gonna suck.

mm yeah that's a good point. i think that the best part about college is the freedom to do what you want to do, so i'll see what interests me and go from there!

You could always opt to write textbooks in any field you want to though. *shrugs*
Lots of things to choose.

I haven't thought about that. That would be pretty cool to do. I'm thinking about either focusing on technical writing or public relations based writing but I can't decide for sure yet.

Psych is really fun as a hobby to learn.

As a career choice I would not recommend it

If you get a PhD in Psychology you'd be doing more research, hence papers. PsyDs are clinic oriented, so not really much writing there.

You sign up to be on the list-servs for ridiculous amounts of clubs. Go to a frat party (just to say you've done it, if you have Greek life). Stay out until early morning with friends on weekends lol. You'll find yourself in labs at 2 am during finals. It'll come naturally lol.

depending on the size of the campus, get a bicycle.

it's a fairly small college, like around 8,000 people.

What?? Mine had like maybe 3000 max?

i was wrong about that, the people living on campus are closer to 3000/4000. there are a lot of campuses that hold tens of thousands of students, though.

Definitely for being homeschooled it'll be an exciting new world lol. Be sure to do all the stereotypical things at your school! 3-4K is a lot still. My school has 45K which overwhelmes some, but you'll have so much fun.

Haha, what would you suggest I do as a freshman? I'm totally clueless about what they are -supposed- to do, but I definitely am gonna love the freedom I'm getting

Bump because I need answers from those who have actually been/are in college:

What is living with a roommate in a tiny dorm room like? In addition to that, how weird is dorm life? I have no idea what to expect and I'm pretty nervous about living with another person. How were your experiences?

Entirely depends on the type of person you are. If you're the quiet type who normally keeps to himself, this is going to be hell for you. If you're outgoing and like parties and constant socialization, its fun. Also depends on your room mate. Completely.

Haha, it might be rough for me then. I'm a pretty social person at times, but I also like a lot of alone time. I'm also transitioning from being homeschooled my entire life from living in a dorm in a public university. It'll be weird.

we're in the same boat. the college i'm going to this year has 30k people enrolled and im living on campus. im hoping it'll just be like... extended sleep away camp.

i'm really happy having my own apartment even though i can barely pay rent sometimes. i got along fine with my parents and it outweighs living with them by a lot. like the other guy said it just comes down to the type of person you are, i could easily see it being a nightmare for me

My roommate and I are sharing an apartment off campus next year. We're complete opposites but it works living together. We balance eachother out & you don't want anyone who's crazier than you lol.
