Sexism and Racism.

almost 8 years

Sexism and racism is inherently linked to power, in such a way that women can't (really) be sexist towards men, and black people can't (really) be racist towards white people.

Yes there are exceptions, I don't want someone to bring up some 3,000 year old civilization that was dominated by black people where they had more privilege.

Racism and sexism are inherently a privilege issue, you can bring up all the cases you want of hate crimes against men from extremists or hate crimes against white people from black people - but it's not racism.

It's discrimination.

If you want to make a case against this then you can prove that women have more privilege than men, or that black people have more privilege than white people.

Maybe it's sad to say that this is primarily the american scope that I'm speaking of, I'm an american so I'm more in tune with american politics and the racial scope in this area.

Discuss.

I think that your friends are disconnected with reality then and you should choose better, more mature friends.

You're right. Being afraid of bigotry and violence is downright irrational when the presidential election has been won by someone whose political claims to fame are his insistence on the need for a wall to keep Mexicans out of the U.S. and his call for a total shutdown of Muslim immigration.

Thinking that you should fear for your life and that things in one's local area have suddenly changed over night due to an election is irrational.

Being concerned for the future of the country and the social changes that might be met over time isn't irrational.

also worth considering, when trump shows these vulnerabilities, (because racism, sexism are weaknesses), it's hard to think youre not seeing the real trump. With trump, at least you know what youre getting (or think you know). Hillary on the other hand....well...she thinks you should have a private and public position.

"White people voted for Trump because they hate black and brown people"

Well there's a very compelling argument in support of this statement based on statistics on criminal justice in the U.S.

"White people voted for Trump because they didn't find enough fault with his racist, sexist, and other prejudiced/questionable statements to deter them"

this is true, and this is IMO, a huge problem

"White people voted for Trump because they didn't find enough fault with his racist, sexist, and other prejudiced/questionable statements to deter them"

I think that there's some confusion about the two above statements

"Afraid" is a really broad and meaningless term in your quote there projectmatt. If you tell me that you have a lot of friends who were afraid for life and limb that they would get attacked or killed I'd call them idiots. If you tell me that they're afraid because they think that Trump's election might signify a bad turn for race relations in America then I'd agree, but the difference in those two statements is VAST and to use the word 'afraid' for that is nothing more than trying to bring 'shock & awe' to your argument like the news does.

a lot of my friends who were minorities were sincerely afraid that they would be jumped/assaulted the day after trump won. that is what i mean.

I think that your friends are disconnected with reality then and you should choose better, more mature friends.

or, they had legitimate and understandable fears because of the victory of a man who has openly said racist things/things that are disparaging to minorities.

a lot of people had the right to feel afraid after trump was elected, i just don't think they're the vocal ones

Look at what Sims said. By disagreeing with me he is saying that it is not an incorrect perception that everyone who voted for trump doesnt care about women black lgbt people or mexicans. Considering 38% of women supported him i find it funny that you are arguing with me.

Which is bigger, 38% or 62%?

Stop assuming someone else's argument and jumping to conclusions, desuo.

all of the posts i saw the day after the election saying "if you voted for trump, make sure to tell all of the women/lgbt/black people/mexicans in your life you don't care about them" made me want to neuter myself

i'm not even gonna try to debate about whether that's right, but you should consider it from their perspective. a lot of minorities that i knew were sincerely afraid after the trump presidency, and whether or not their perception of trump is true or false, it's a perception that a lot of people have.

It's a factually incorrect perception.

i would disagree with you there. trump has exhibited tendencies that are blatantly racist/sexist/bigoted, regardless of whether or not you think he means them.

That doesnt mean that every single person who voted for Trump agrees with those tendancies, therefore its a factually incorrect perception.

oh, the perception that i'm talking about is that people fear that trump is going to normalize and make bigotry/racism/sexism okay and acceptable, which is an understandable thought.

Another really easy generalization that could be made is that most white people over the age of 50~ exhibit slight racist tendencies at the least. A conversation with your average baby boomer will show that they think most brown people are illegal immigrants and lesser citizens and black people are violent and uneducated.

Note that those persons also voted for Trump in record breaking turn out

these same people also voted for Hillary in the primary.
