Why we shouldn't use the R-word

deletedover 8 years

"Do not call something you don't like "Redacted". By calling something "Redacted", you are essentially saying an undesirable object or event is the same as someone with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities. This invalidates feelings and the identities of people with disabilities and puts them in a position where they are used to describe something that is considered to be flawed, useless, or stupid. It also makes YOU look flawed, useless and stupid by using such an uncool term. There are a ton of great words you can use instead to describe things, people, and situations that anger or annoy you.

For example: If something is a bad idea, you can use words such as dense, useless, obtuse, pathetic, or vapid. Don't forget terms like jackass or bonehead. Or make up snappy new insults. Swearing may be okay, but might make you look less impressive.

If someone or something angers you, use words like contemptible, enraging, evil, infuriating, horrible, irrational, rage-inducing. If someone or something is disgusting, try using nasty, gross, foul, nauseating, skeevy, repellent, repulsive, vomitous or terrible instead."

"The historical context of the word is important to know. People with disabilities have been treated poorly, discriminated against, abused, and neglected in the past and even today. Just changing the way you speak and avoiding using the term can make a difference for people with disabilities today and in the future."

"…support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities."

Seriously though you guys are seriously trying to offend yourselves over being offended, it's not a nice cycle.

Oh no it's actually happening.

Every time I've ever reported someone for HC I've put "spite report" right there in the report. At least I'm honest.

nice to know edark defends calvin for making fun of other people's mental disorders too lmao

"giga isn't selfvoting. how do i make him selfvote? maybe i should make fun of his mental disorder, that will work!"

Im not defending him since 2 wrongs doesnt make 1 right, I just found your comment hypocritical

Oh no, I won't sit here and argue that most of the people who report for HC are offended because that's simply not true. I'm talking about the fact that the word itself can offend more than just the intended target.

I love how Ichizon is one of the weaker trolls EM has had yet the same people constantly fall for what he says. He's funny more than anything.

He's never been a troll or funny, just imho.

Are you an alt of a person that has been around 4-5 years? His recent stuff is far weaker than back then.

Ask yourself truthfully, how many people have legitmately reported someone for HC when they actually were offended and not in an attempt to try and abuse that rule to get the other person a violation?

ppl dont even report hc cause they're offended

Im not going down the slippery slope fallacy and act like you cant have banter and that you should ban all insults, but I dislike the whole mentality people have about language and their attempt(regardless of their valiant intention) of policing certain words. Like the word idiot used to mean exactly the same thing as r-word and its meaning has been changed among most people. The same was thing happend with the f-word untill people started policing it which caused it to regain it old meaning. Its quite counterproductive and doesnt stop the hate whatsoever.

I can see that point of view, I think that the most important thing to highlight though is that if you publicly insult someone using a word that can cause offense to someone, there could be a person who's upset by it. The thing that's key in the OP is the history of discrimination while using the word. Yes, meanings can change. They can also change for worse. The DSM had to change redacted to "intellectually disabled" because of the abuse of the word.

"there could be a person who's upset by it"

Ask yourself truthfully, how many people have legitmately reported someone for HC when they actually were offended and not in an attempt to try and abuse that rule to get the other person a violation? Thats literally about 99% of the cases.

How about we just let all insults through, beacuse you know. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

If words hurt you, you are a soft baby and don't need to breed anymore, so I'll insult you until your suicidal and kill yourself off. I'm here for the better advancement of the human race, survival of the fittest.

I understand you guys wanting to get us to stop using that word, but I've been using it in game for so long that I'm just conditioned to type it out when I find something outlandish. I wish it was moderated more lax-ly, I can say it once or twice in a single game and not get reported for it and a mod will find me saying it and give me a violation for doing that. Like, real? Chill, my dude. I'm not trying to intentionally shame anyone. But yea, good thread.

Yeah its a word that's encoded into a lot of people, and that's really not their fault. As long as people consciously try to steer away form words that insult a group of people you really can't be blamed.

I definitely think that it should be moderated much more laxly in game. I think we warned pranay a million times before we slapped him with a violation.

both sides over complicate a simple matter, i dont have an issue not saying the r word in front of people who don't want me to but i don't think people should get on my case if i actively choose to use it with a group of people i know its OK with
