This website is far past the point where having ranked and unranked games in main lobby makes sense.
Both sandbox and main lobby suffer from this weird choice. Unranked games should go in sandbox, which will boost the ever slowing population of 12 person closed setups, and ranked games should go in main lobby.
Without the influx of unranked games being made, competitive games will not be second paged so fast, and thus fill more often, allowing more than 2 setups to be played each round.

this!!! it's also players - being called sh*t or being lynched for being new and being told to be reported is so detrimental in learning this game, i realise there's only so much you can teach a new player before they have to learn how to do things themselves, but perhaps giving a friendly intro to the site once u sign up isn't a bad idea, or at least, not in my opinion
So what if it doesn't prepare someone directly for ranked? It is meant to be an introduction to the game of mafia for those who are ignorant of how to play (see: new users). It also servers as a small buffer for gamethrowing alts, but that's besides the point.
It's not really going over that well, I think. Progress is very slow and the player base hasn't shown to be overly experimental beyond a few regulars. There's also the playstyle, which is a much bigger barrier between new players and sandbox players from my point of view.

i think we can all agree that the 5 unranked game requirement serves no beneficial purpose
Please tell me you're trolling on this one. When I first started I had no idea what roles were what.
unless i'm wrong, i believe you can play out those 5 unranked games in sandbox where many of those roles are not implemented for your average ranked setups. consequently, you're no better prepared for a red heart.
the current mentor system is the biggest joke of the site
ACTUALLY NO, THAT'S BEBOP

it's a good thing you're not on the mod team for long bítch
I will OBLITERATE you

it's up to the more experienced players in the game to guide new players along, but the fact remains that 5 unranked games do NOT prepare you for ranked in any way, shape or form. neither does 50, nor 500.
+ Sandbox games (closed setup) are different than more common unranked games in Main.
i was under the impression that sandboxers were currently in the process of eliminating the association between sandbox games and closed role setups to encourage diversity but i could be wrong
I have no idea. I don't talk with a lot of Sandbox people nor do I know what actually happens there.

And then a new player that join a ranked game because they can't tell the difference, does something wrong, and then is subject to reports by the other 6 people in the game.
and then it gets no vio because mods are told to be more lenient, and frustration assured as people have to deal with newbies on a game to game basis

on the topic of ranked : can we PLEASE make it easier to get a mentor ive been waiting for 1 for like ... 2 MONTHS
As much as I appreciate lucid, I don't think appealing to him over everything is the best idea. He is active on the site but no the community and does not always make the best choices in changes that affect the community.
Whether or not you all personally believe this regarding the separation of unranked and ranked games, this is a perfectly valid and true point
Here we go...... Rutab's not-very-in-depth thoughts:
Pros:
- Main Lobby can focus on hosting the most exciting and purposeful games.
- Ranked games will only be shown on the games table, not being flooded with 50 person setups or other chat rooms.
- Reports from a separate unranked lobby will be easier to identify.
- People will know there is a blatant difference between unranked and ranked games.
Cons:
- A very large mixture of two different communities may not mix well. + Sandbox games (closed setup) are different than more common unranked games in Main. + The people within the communities generally have different cultures and norms.
- A split of lobbies, like competitive games and red hearts, may reduce player activity for other games. For example, new players being introduced to ranked games through the same lobby as unranked games could increase their chances for exploring outside their comfort zone. + A possible easy fix for this could be the removal of 5 unranked games played to join a red heart game. This would not fix the common skill-level complaint, though.
That's just off the top of my head right now, but I'm sure we'll all come up with more.
How should I know, you always have the same expression so that I can't read your face.
