i'm curious to see how the community feels about diagnosing yourself at home, whether it'd be mental illness(or lack of mental illness) or physical stuff. i personally think it's a terrible idea, and i also think pointing that out isn't wrong.

I'm not an expert, I've just previously lived in an abusive home. I'm speaking from experience. Perspective and anecdotes can be key in debates

If somebody is living in a broken & abusive home, chances are, they're mentally ill and cannot go to a professional because of their abusive guardian. What do they do then? C'mon, tell me. Do they wait? Do they wait until they're legally an adult and have no medication despite being ill for many years? Do they let their illness culminate?

BTW, I was diagnosed by a professional as having paranoid schizophrenia at ten. TEN. You know why? I displayed, and still display all the positive, negative and cognitive symptoms.

There's this thing to self diagnosis: most people that do it can't get professional diagnosis. I reiterate this because it is important.

Lots of schools don't actually KNOW parents are abusive until the kid comes to school looking battered. Teachers can be worried and suspect as such, but they can't know for sure, or just fling accusations.

I know that I didn't tell anybody of my home life because I was terrified of the consequences of what'd happen if this guardian found out I did so; it might not be the same for everybody, but that was my own experience.

I know. But most counselors & psychologists will relay information to their parents, I'm quite sure it's a legal thing. Lots of, not all, teens won't go there because they're afraid that the authority will talk to their parents. It's a bit of a fear factor, and a big risk for them.
