i'm curious to see how the community feels about diagnosing yourself at home, whether it'd be mental illness(or lack of mental illness) or physical stuff. i personally think it's a terrible idea, and i also think pointing that out isn't wrong.

People who self-diagnosis mental illness never get confirmation that's kind of the whole point and why self-diagnosis is dumb.

Self diagnosis is okay if you get a doctor to confirm it. And if they say you are wrong you are wrong
in the ways of physical if you self diagnose with a cold or sore throat thats alright but dont self diagnose with a stroke.

Also hormone imbalances are a major cause of all sorts of issues.

BPD is a good example actually of what you're saying because it can't even really be diagnosed until someone is in their late teens/early 20s because before that point pretty much all teenagers exhibit traits that could be identified as BPD. Basically without professional diagnosis you have no idea if your slew of symptoms are the result of a singular disease with co-morbidity or if you have 5 different problems.

But if someone is claiming to have a mental illness, they probably have one.

see this is the thing though, plenty of mental illnesses have little symptoms that add up to one big thing. having a few of them doesn't equal having the actual problem. so anyone whos sane but a bit paranoid or have anxiety might convince themselves otherwise. not to mention, plenty of teenagers have wild hormones and mood swings(also menopause women tbh) which could easily bring out some bad symptoms that sound like BPD or bipolar disorder. most teenagers just have to grow out of their immature traits. of course some actually struggle with the actual disorders but a lot of them do not

Depends on what they're self diagnosing. If it's something little then it doesn't really matter. But if someone is claiming to have a mental illness, they probably have one.

lol my boyfriend always say i'm really hypochondriac. like i had a bad headache almost everyday last week and i thought i might have a brain tumor, but it's obviously due to lack of sleep.

You can have a stroke at 20 but it was probably just hard gas.

It's a completely terrible idea. There's a reason why there are qualified professionals who go to school for these things and self diagnosis only leads to problems. For one it can cover up more serious issues or lead one to engage in delusional behavior based upon an incorrect diagnosis of one's own issues.

Go see a shrink or a doctor kiddos.
