im trying to say that the show is supposed to be funny and therefore it focuses more on character development that plot development. the arcs of the show are all very concise. i know the anime community tends to unanimously agree that you need to start an anime from the beginning, however i really havent been a part of the community for a while. the last anime i have watched was the tatami galaxy maybe a year ago, and before that its been quite a while since i was really into anime. none of the people ive watched gintama with were actually into anime, they just watched it because it was popular or it was just on tv. i clearly remember asking a friend of mine what episode to put on and he said "it doesn't matter, just the newest one"
So are you saying I can just start watching Gintama randomly from any episode and still find it funny?
Wow! Why didn't anyone tell me that before? :D I honestly though it required knowledge of previous character interactions and arcs that had taken place prior to the episode.
Well, now that this is confirmed, I have a new sense of respect fro Gintama. Well, I always did appreciate its comedic aspect anyways. :D
And sure, a large number of seasons may be a bit scary at first but if the episodes are anything like Mushishi and have a story of their own then its probably the type of show I would want to watch. And I'm saying that as an avid anime watcher.
and jesus christ gintama isnt like naruto or hunter x hunter. do you consider seinfield a commitment to watch because it had 9 seasons? cant an anime be long without requiring commitment, or even a necessary viewing order?
i swear the people i know who dont watch anime can watch the few episodes they watch and laugh their off, but everyone who watches anime has a problem watching gintama normally, to the point where they wont even try it
Aw I liked One Punch Man a lot. Cute, good animation, and I do like creative parodies. Plus the background behind OPM, how it was an objectively poorly drawn webcomic before it got picked up, is pretty cool and inspiring.
But then I haven't seen Gintama. I need to one of these days.
And yeah Ajin's CGI weirdness is a turnoff but the intrigue is good enough that I deal with it. And I'm getting used to the style--it isn't bad honestly? After the first half I was completely used to it, pfft.
Also I saw someone mention Osomatsu-san that got downvoted an obscene amount and tho I laughed I do have to say it's one of the ones I'm watching right now. It isn't even that funny most of the time I just. Keep watching it. I can't find it in me to stop.
delete this thread and everyone in it (except me obv)

watched 2 episodes of both anime and I can already say that the main character of gintama is much better and also gintama is funnier than OPM ahahahahaha
Yo tho has anyone seen Naoki Urasawa's Monster? It's bananas. Talk to me about Johan Liebert pls. :'^)
loved Monster, but i cant say i remember all the details, since i saw it about 4 years ago. it was very thrilling, albeit there is a good chunk of episodes that drag on a bit with a sluggish pacing in the plot. i think it's roughly when he goes to visit the university iirc? idk
i think Monster is v compelling, and my fav char is still the detective. also found johan's righthand man v intriguing. the fight scene btwn these 2 is great also.
as for the thematic elements, i feel like it's a little heavy-handed at times. repetition sort of drives the point home, but the most beautiful, haunting moments come when new characters interact and further unravel the mystery. the tall guy who helps the doctor towards the end (i forget his name, but he was also at -that place- with johan) was a really great touch. the characters in the story really make the show.
Monster was amazing, but sometimes it was a bit too slowpaced for my taste. NEVER FORGET THE AMAZING STEINER
