I would like to have a thought provoking and civil conversation about ISIS.....what you think will stop them, what will make it worse. Please make this a civil and appropriate discussion. i am looking for a good conversation not a flame war.

I was just pointing out that we should stop tiptoeing around the fact that your holy book literally instructs you to kill and behead nonbelievers - and that may have something to do with why ISIS is killing and beheading nonbelievers.

Yea their actions have nothing to do with politics. They been waging an unsuccessful holy war for near 2 millenia.

Apparently a mall relatively close to my city was evacuated this morning in response to a possible terror threat, but I have no idea if it has anything to do with ISIS specifically, or some other terrorist group

I don't like where this topic is going. I believe this isn't the best place to discuss the rightfulness of Islam. Instead we should continue the main discussion.

ISIS isn't Sunni, ISIS is Wahhabi Muslim. They have no right to kill Muslims or non-Muslims.

Quran (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

Quran (9:123) - "O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness."

Quran (47:3-4) - "Those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord... So, when you meet those who disbelieve, smite at their necks till when you have killed and wounded many of them."

They apparently do have the right to kill non-muslims...

This is exactly what happens when you start to read Quran with no information about when and in what situation that verse descended and what it really meant. It's obvious that there can be many different perceptions and only one of them is correct which is why each verse should be interpreted and explained. We know that many non-Muslims used to live in the Islamic empire at the time these verses descended, and if these verses were generally talking about every non-Muslim it would cause a lot of death which we know never happened so these verses are only talking about a few groups of non-Muslims especially the ones that were first to claim war with the Muslims. The prophet himself said whoever harms Ahl Al-zame (which includes the people of the book (Christian, Jewish, ..) who have sought refuge in the Islamic empire) has harmed me. pm me for more details.

Yes, I have. Very often. In the original Arabic. I was a devout Muslim for the first 12 years of my life and have read a lot of Qura'an since too. I can categorically state that what is now called "Jihadism" is not the regular or common interpretation of the text. Nor does the text anyway call for things like this. There are ways to misinterpret it, yes, which is one of the reasons (one among many) I am no longer Muslim. I think that that fault lies more with the interpreter than with the text though.

mimer is completely correct here. Those verses are usually taken completely out of context (never mind mistranslated there).

How are they taken out of context. Have you ever read the Quran? I have and there are many verses like that that directly teach to kill non believers and convert through violence. As I showed before, their whole religion is based on a man who made an army and invaded cities and did al of those things.

There are many types of monsters in this world. Monsters who cause trouble without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood... and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance. They are much more cunning than others: They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they've never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them... because in truth, I am that monster.

They're cockroaches. Even if you kill them all, more will crawl out of the cracks to take the place of the fallen ones. Religion is a disease.
