Roguelikes & Roguelites

almost 6 years

I realized that there was no proper topic for these kinds of games, so here we go.

For those unaware, roguelikes are games taking off of a game from 1980 called Rogue. It featured permadeath, procedurally generated levels, tile-based levels, and turned base combat, and thus the term roguelike was used to describe games that use the same mechanics. "Roguelite" is a blanket term for games that follow the roguelike formula, but take off with unique styles and mechanics that make it more of a roguelike-like if anything.

I'd love to get a discussion going about some roguelikes/lites here, since it's where I spend the majority of my time on on steam nowadays.

I'm also gonna be posting "roguelike showcases" to bring some more attention to them on my alt Charlotte, so it's easier to see them there.

PS my favorite roguelike game of all time is Nuclear Throne, try it ty!

While I always found the idea of sequels to roguelikes odd, especially with Spelunky being a near perfected formula, I think this game working on that and adding a lot more content and depth could improve this near perfected formula. Online play is a huge plus too, something that could only be done through mods in the old game.

Does anyone find the graphics a bit offputting though? It may just be me, and I know this is an early-ish trailer but I'm sold on everything but how the game actually looks so far. I hope the final product has a bit more detail and polishes these rough edges, but either way it'll just take a bit getting used to.

Edit: I read through the comments a bit, and apparently Spelunky HD looked pretty icky in it's early stages too. This minor complaint aside I have high hopes for this game

I'm excited for Spelunky 2 when ever it comes out, but if you want a hardcore roguelike there is Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME), Nethack, and Angband.

The first game I'd like to bring attention to is Night of the Blood Moon. It's a Rogue-lite I've been following for a while now, as the dev has been taking inspiration from Nuclear Throne and applying what made that fun into here, but also making it it's own unique identity that I've had lots of fun playing through. It's still in need of a little polish here and there, but as a game that's only come out recently by a sole developer I definitely recommend it to any roguelike fans.
