Hello everyone! I would like to ask the people who are interested in this event to participate and contribute as much as possible.

In order for 2 new roles to be added to em, the community has to work together to refine the ideas that are going to be mentioned below. We have to collectively select 2 of the best ideas and make sure their version is the best one possible. The next step would be to come up with some sort of artwork for the selected roles. Lucid mentioned something about rewarding the users behind the artwork that would get selected in the end for those 2 roles.

Jack the Ripper (originally Hypocrite)

  • Jack the Ripper hates anyone who kills.
  • Jack the Ripper only wins when the game ends and all murderers are dead.
  • If Jack the Ripper receives a gun or knife and kills someone with it, he will not consider himself a murderer.
  • To Jack the Ripper, murderers are killing roles or any other player that has successfully eliminated someone else (shot, stabbed, blown up, etc.)
  • If a player survives one of these actions, Jack the Ripper will not consider the attacker a murderer. (~Jennings)

Cat Lady

  • Chooses one player every night. The player is instantly alerted that a cat is at their door. They have two options: Kill the cat, and let it go. If you kill the cat, you are roleblocked and the Cat Lady doesn't know who was visited. If you let it go, the Cat Lady learns your role.
  • Sided with the mafia. (~Her)

Robinhood

  • Visits two people, taking all items from the first and giving them to the second (cannot visit self either way)
  • Action fails if trying to steal from a mafia
  • Sided with the village (~Torreador)

Vice President

  • If the president dies, takes their place
  • All townies immediately receive a message of their new president
  • Attends mafia meetings, and makes them anonymous
  • Cannot win if they are the vice president (~Alyssa)

Gossiper

  • Chooses one person every night.
  • Will see some whispers this person receives/makes.
  • Gossiper's action does not count as a visit.
  • Sided with the mafia. (~Soluciones)

(revising) the Seer

  • Knows all mafia from the beginning of the game.
  • If lynched at the end of the game, the last mafia can guess who the Seer is for autowin.
  • If the Seer dies, they will appear as a random (non-mafia) role in the setup and their will will always be blank. If dead, the mafia can still attempt a guess to the Seer's identity at the end of the game.
  • If there are multiple Seers in a game, only one Seer will know the mafia at any given time.
  • If there are two mafias and multiple Seers, the knowledge of the mafias will be split between them.
  • Sided with the village. (~Shwartz99)

Whistleblower

  • Once per game can force someone to vote someone else. Vote cannot be OT'D if it is a hammer. Sided with maf (Will create more tension in selfing/hammering based setups (~Moldyches)

Soldier

  • If they are the last man standing against a single mafia or third party, the village wins.
  • Sided with the village. (~XFire)

PowerTown

  • Each night chooses a power role from the options provided to him. (the mods should determine the list)
  • Night meeting goes accordingly
  • Sided with the village

PowerMafia

  • Each night chooses a mafia role from the list.
  • Night meeting goes accordingly
  • Sided with the mafia

In my opinion the key to make a role competitive is a perfect setup, not the role itself.

also whats different from the rain dude to widow? lol the widow punishes the town for lynching her so town is rushed to lynch asap before its too late, instead of the rainmaker doing it whenever he wants

justice: theres cop and roles that revolve around the cops mechanics for you to decide if you lynch the report or not (miller, godfather, lawyer, framer).

commuter blocks the person who visits it. again, i dont really see the point of it blocking you.

Shayne, do you want to help compile in Google docs a list of features, from low hanging to difficult that will dramatically help new players on board in the game?

cat lady just makes mafia autowins easier. its just hooker+gramps with a twist.

and seer is a civilian thats knows all mafias from the getgo

for me a competitive role is a simple role that brings something interesting to the game. librarian and toreador are good 'new' roles. justice and commuter are bad new roles.

Justice and Commuter are both standard roles in mafia competitions hosted on MafiaScum and MafiaUniverse, and the first time I ever saw a “parity cop” was in a real life mafia game Sl0nd showed me on Twitch. Why do you think they’re bad?

golbolco do you just find ok sandboxy roles? lol

I tend to avoid Sandbox roles when I can, but maybe we have different definitions of what that means.

I like roles that open up the game to using new mechanics and changing paradigms. I tend to avoid roles that exist to cause chaos or random events. The former I call “good roles,” the latter I call “sandbox roles.” That’s not to say I haven’t created or approved some Sandbox roles though.

but adding new mechanics doesnt mean it makes it a competitive role. tell me whats competitive about cat lady or seer

Cat Lady is a prisoner’s dilemma kind of scenario: for power roles, having a cat at your doorstep means you have to choose between two bad options and determine which is less worse for not only you but the town’s win condition.

Seer makes scumhunting subverted because you can’t be open about your known information without getting caught.

what makes a competitive role to you? from your post i'm inferring that a competitive role is one that rehashes existing mechanics that other roles already have.

also what about a role that gives an item to the dead and its passed around and the role can then summon everyone dead back to life? maybe we could rework creepy girl what do u think golbolco? thats sandboxy tho

I think you should instate a tutorial mode, and make a thread asking people what tips should go into it. (these would be tips telling people things they should know, not strategies.) Personally, I think a nice thing for tutorial mode would be if it told people what the mafia counterpart of their role was. Like if you roll heartbreaker, it would say
[red bo below game] "Note: the village version of your role is 'Lover'."
Now, that isn't giving a strategy (it isn't saying "claim lover." but it's giving you information I think would be useful to a new user.

(if someone rolls virgin) night one [red box below game] "Virgin usually outs day 1, since lynching virgin prevents a mafia kill the next night."

Speaking of things we need to help new users: tutorial mode that you can toggle on or off for yourself. Most people learn the game by jumping right in and learning as they go. There should be red boxes that tell them what to do and give them tips. These tips should be different dependering on if they rolled town or mafia, and even some tips for specific roles (I don't wanna hand-hold, but tbh it'll help everyone if the brand-new people know how to play).

Some tips can be:
(if someone rolls village) [red arrow pointing at the village meeting] "Village meeting. Try to get the mafia lynched. A lynch will only go through if the majority votes for someone."

(if someone rolls mafia) at night meeting [red arrow pointing at players] "If you find out what roles your partners are, you can click on the box nest to their name and mark them. Only you will see this." [red arrow pointing at mafia meeting] "Mafia meeting. Vote for who to kill. A kill will only go through if the majority votes for them." (you would be surprised how many times I've been in a mafia meeting where there are only two of us, and the new user votes someone completely different after I've already voted.)

And some tips can just show up randomly - things a user should know.

[red box below the game] "Is the day/night over and taking too long because not everyone has voted? Clicking he 'kick players' feature at the top of the game can speed things along."

[red box below the game] "Need to get a players attention while they are not paying attention or afk? Saying their username will give them a ping. Need to ping everyone who is playing? Say @everyone."

There should be a TON of these tips imo. Esp with no tutorials users have to play.

I like the idea of a mafia-sided Jailkeep. There's a few new roles that could use mafia versions.

Pig is one of my personal favorites, thanks for the endorsement!

Also, I've found a role by golb that I've particularly liked, it goes by the name Pig.

Please add a mafia version of Jailkeep into the game. I would name it Boogeyman.

Car Salesman
- Every day, is able to slap car roof, this action gives everyone in town a message that says "This baby's only got 5 thousand miles on it".
- Every night, gives candy to children of buyers with creepy smile.
- Any role that visits gets stuck in a long boring conversation with car salesman.
- Sided with the mafia.

I'm not quoting that post but thank you shwartz. The flavor of em has been destroyed this last batch of roles.
