no one said it is. i don't define myself largely on my gender, it's just the thing. the only reason you see lots of transgender people unifying and trying to be proud of being trans is because so many people like yourself try to shame them for it.
idk why that article is locked behind a login thing, but the title of it is: "Largest Study to Date: Transgender Hormone Treatment Safe" which you can find on google easily
so why are they all still depressed and suicidal and stuff after they transition
well, here's one study that showed literally a 90% decrease in depression among transgender people who were allowed to transition: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/827713
there's a bunch of other studies that show overall decreases in suicide rates/depression due to transitioning that i can dig up for you if you would like
but overall, i would guess that suicide/depression rates are higher among transgender people on average because society tends to be discriminatory/unaccepting of them in a number of ways
so you're saying transitioning genders is an act and not a disorder but anyone who would want to actually do it has a disorder?
nope, the key word is "Dysphoria" - it becomes a disorder when it causes extreme distress/interferes with daily life, as that is generally how mental disorders are classified. being transgender and transitioning is not mental illness - it's when it causes extreme distress.
and again, even if you try to argue that all transgender people are mentally ill, the best proven way to help them is to allow them to transition and live peacefully.
The American Psychiatric Association, the organization that determines what is/isn't a mental disorder, said this about being transgender:
"DSM-5 aims to avoid stigma and ensure clinical care for individuals who see and feel themselves to be a different gender than their assigned gender. It replaces the diagnostic name "Gender Identity Disorder" with "Gender Dysphoria", as well as makes other important clarifications in the criteria. It is important to note that gender non-conformity is not in itself a mental disorder. The critical element of gender dysphoria is the presence of clinically significant distress associated with the condition."
So, being gender-non conforming or being transgender isn't a "disease" or an "illness" by nature, and in the case that it causes extreme distress like with gender dsyorphia, then the best possible treatment is usually to help that individual transition.
Just saying "trans is mental illness" is silly and means nothing to how they should be treated.
like, really. many decades from now, you're going to be part of the next group people look back on and think "wow i can't believe people actually thought like that. how horrible."
you'll be right up there with the newly accepted schizophrenics and psychotics
are you really going to do the whole "transgender people are mentally ill" thing?
i thought even transgender people acknowledged gender dysphoria is a disease

i mean if ur going to ignore what modern science/research/doctors would tell you about the highly complex thing that is gender/sex because you want to feel cool & edgy, there's no hope trying to convince you
