This website is far past the point where having ranked and unranked games in main lobby makes sense.
Both sandbox and main lobby suffer from this weird choice. Unranked games should go in sandbox, which will boost the ever slowing population of 12 person closed setups, and ranked games should go in main lobby.
Without the influx of unranked games being made, competitive games will not be second paged so fast, and thus fill more often, allowing more than 2 setups to be played each round.

There are going to be two types of people who want to play this game. The first type is going to be scared away from playing ranked games, go to sandbox/unranked games, and stay there. They would have ended up there anyway.
The second type is the type that comes to this website now and is turned away immediately by unranked games. This type is going to be thrilled to have found the serious mafia website they were looking for, for which a demand exists.
The only issue I have with this is the fact that it's not going to help people learn. This would only work if people who played ranked games didn't report every single loss they have on a newer player. This is what I predict will happen: New users have two choices. They either go to sandbox to start with unranked and they learn absolutely nothing because everyone in sandbox will just be trolling around. Or, they will go directly to ranked, mess up, get reported, and will not want to continue. I think first we have to fix the mentality that new players need to start somewhere, and that users should be teaching how to play instead of punishing new players for trying to learn.

Today while playing unranked games for about 45 minutes, I met 5 separate brand new users who said they wanted to play serious games but didn't know how. I pointed them to the featured setups, upon which they thanked me and said they'd never have known there were even serious games.

You never "have" to play unranked games. No one's forcing you to do anything on epic mafia.
If you make new players join ranked games right off the bat of course they're going to break like half the game-related violations. Why don't we just get rid of those too? I wouldn't mind that at all, game-related vios are dumb

Not true at all. If you play unranked games, you'll meet actual new users constantly. This website doesn't keep new users. The unranked game requirement is probably a large part of the reason why

Whenever I have to play unranked games, which turns out is pretty often, everyone suicides in less than 5 minutes 95% of the time. What a way to learn.

Unranked games literally let you learn the ropes of the game. If anyone can hop into a ranked game the reports a week will be doubled, something the mod team shouldn't have to handle because you're slightly inconvenienced
Even if you don't learn strategies from some dumb setups, you learn HOW to play epic mafia. The mechanics of the game, and you're not walking into a ranked setup where 6-10 people right after setup, where these people will likely yell at you, harass you and be generally rude just for making them miss out on some fake internet points.

People should immediately hop into ranked classic mafia, where they can learn the mechanics of the game. A few of those players will get competent enough to join competitive games.
Ranked classic mafia games should serve the purpose unranked games are supposed to serve now.
People who want to play unranked should be given an area of the website to do that away from the games of actual mafia.
Unranked is not a game. It's a chat room with a theme.

Don't new players have to play X amount of unranked games until they can play ranked games? They're going to have to go to sandbox if that's where unranked games are. And so Sandbox should become the main lobby, and main lobby should be the side hoe.

playerbases arent split up by ranked and unranked. Im not saying that's a simplistic view, I'm saying it's simply not true. the people who play unranked games in main arent the same people who play unranked games in sandbox. they play completely different setups. taking away their power to play unranked games in main isnt going to push them to sandbox, it might for a few I guess, but cmon, at what cost. AT WHAT COST.
removing unranked from main ONLY hurts main. trying to argue anything else is ridiculous.

I'm not arguing that new players go to sandbox. I'm arguing that all unranked players be sent to sandbox, which will serve as an alcatraz of sorts.
