West Coast Real Estate

almost 11 years

I've decided that within the next 10 years that I want to relocate out of NY because it's cold and expensive.

I'm planning on visiting San Diego and possibly LA some time in May and would like to visit different areas up and down the coast over the next few years to see where I could ultimately move to after I've gained enough experience to be able to more easily get a job in a new market.

Since I know there are people on the site who are from this part of the country, I was hoping some of you could provide insight.

The only things I am not about are too cold, too rural or "cookie cutter" type communities where the most ethnic thing to eat is Taco Bell or Panda Express. (I've heard parts of LA can be like this)

Things I like: Food, warm, reasonably affordable MBA, good job markets, affordable apartment/housing, public transit

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

Britain is a pretty relaxed nation tbh. The Trade Unions have done a decent job of keeping work hours reasonable here (though not to the extremes of France or Italy).

Why would you not just go to Miami

Because it's a fake city and the humidity is awful

England has no mountains, very few forests, and much less people.

Apparently from searching it says that England has 53 million people, quite a bit for such a small land mass. California has double the land mass of England and only has 38 million people, Washington has 7 million and Oregon has 4 million.

Yeah. But about 8.5 million of those are in Greater London alone, with another 3 million in Greater Manchester and the Greater Birmingham area another 2.5. Outside of those big urban areas, there's plenty of more rural towns. They just aren't as far apart as settlements in America.

HR jobs will be all the rage in London, given the City of London is still the financial capital of the world (bigger than Wall Street), and a lot of related companies are all over the place there. I wouldn't recommend living in London though. The M4 Corridor area around Reading has a lot of Technology jobs (Britain's answer to the Silicion Valley). And cities like Brighton & Bristol are both great for businesses and for leisure. Britain definitely sleeps a lot more than NYC (excluding London, which is like a bigger, messier NYC).

If you speak additional languages, then that's a major plus here too. Lots of links to Europe.

Yeah, I've heard living in London can be a bit much and is super expensive besides. Sleep is good, I can appreciate that.

Thats right I forgot your on LI. Ya come move to hoboken and be a jersey man like myself. Its the best option. I take the bus to the train to Wall Street every weekend for my internship right now. then full time next year. Its a pain but ya do what ya gotta do.

Plus the public sector isn't particularly large in the UK, compared to the rest of Europe. Most of it got privatised by the Tories in the 80s and early 90s.

Exactly. You take NQR from brooklyn to the East Side?

Nah, I'm still on LI. I take the LIRR every day and it blows.

If I moved to Queens I'd take the 7 or R train into Manhattan, at least in the areas I've been looking at. and yeah man, I believe it. Nothing can be worse than Times Square though.

That's not terrible. I spend close to 3 hours commuting round trip and I'd love to cut that in half.

Fun thing to note, it only takes 3 hours to get to Seattle from Portland.

Washington has legal weed and gay marriage too if you're into that kind of stuff.

The trip from Brooklyn to Manhattan is at least an hour usually and those 3 trains are crowded to hell on weekdays.

@Bront- Well you can take a 25 minute bus to port authority bus terminal for 2.50 then the subway to the east side. Maybe hop on the 1,2,3 train for another 2.50. Total commute maybe 40 mins at rush hour mornings. And def do you'll love it. let me know

More expensive then good patry shops in the city or even some spots in north Jersey. Cannoli's probably sell for like 40$ a dozen and cakes are extremely expensive most are order only.

Corporate Culture is pretty solid in the UK. Brighton is within commuting distance of London and is also growing it's own business culture. What sector do you specifically care about?

I work in Human Resources; I'd prefer to stay in the private sector (although in the UK I don't know if there's as much of a difference between private/public as there are here). Industry I am flexible on and could theoretically work in any area, although there are definitely industries I prefer to others.

Working hours and work/life balance are big for me since NYC "The city that never sleeps" should be renamed "the city that never stops working"

@Jill- The cake boss store is a joke unless you got tons to spend. I've had it once when cake boss first came out and havent been back. ( There cupcakes where fantastic though.)
