Senior Council of Sandbox

over 5 years

Hello,

With the recent events brought upon the box of sand, I've decided we need a Senior Council of Sandbox to assist with the addressing of ongoing conflicts within Sandbox/EpicMafia. This will not include other lobbies specifically for the time being.

Requirements of Membership:

  • Have an account created in 2013 or earlier (2012, 2011, 2010)
  • Be unbiased and mature
  • Be active
  • Meme when necessary

What do you get?

  • A black robe and staff
  • Advising powers over the Sandbox/EpicMafia community and it's "drama"

Comment below if you have ideas/want to become a member.

Community Discussion Thread: https://epicmafia.com/topic/92239

Is this a good idea?

In regards to this council: I regretfully submit I'd like to be removed from the council.

In my years here, it has been my stance to avoid participating in drama, and actively turning away from it wherever possible. When I signed up, I thought this would be a meaningless silly club that us old time players could hang out in and have a sense of camaraderie, but apparently the notion of such a thing has ruffled a lot of feathers, and that is not something I want to be part of.

I have been a proud member of epicmafia since 2010. That doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone else, and while I do not believe this club was ever declaring it was, people are getting that impression, so I tender my resignation.

Best of luck to your counsel, I wish you the best.

Should we pose a new discussion topic on how site rules are applied? If so, what should the question be that is asked? I will add it to the main post.

Thanks for the invite! :D If this is serious, I'd say the first task is to discuss the overarching vision of this group. Going off my earlier comments, my suggestion would be along the lines of:

"Act as the conduit between community and moderators" - but this should be discussed, also do we want to include main community? I think of course, segregation is bad.

Then, how are we going to execute this vision?

We'd have to set up the proper infrastructure, perhaps a discord channel within one of the EM discords. We'd also need to someway to communicate with admins, perhaps also through Discord. Finally, we'd have to spread awareness throughout community so they can come to us when they feel disparaged by the moderators.

A more low-hanging-fruit task would be to compile all community-questioned moderator decisions (i.e. Phlorax, or hipfiring debacle the other day in main) and then prove ourselves by discussing and leading change if appropriate.

And then finally, if this is the vision, admins shouldn't be in this group (sorry gris ily XD)

Hello, I have added you to the council. If you would like to be removed, please let me know.

Should we pose a new discussion topic on how site rules are applied? If so, what should the question be that is asked? I will add it to the main post.

I agree, this is my point in creating the council aside from upholding the views of older users who have seen the rise and fall of Epicmafia. There is no place to express our views/takes on what is going on. I also feel like we can help expose the beliefs of the community to better it, not worsen.

Best believe if any member of the council does not uphold the justice and welfare of the community as a whole, they will be removed.

i agree in that bullying users is never a good way to solve site issues, however i also understand the feelings of some users that the violation wasn't enough and that they feel their safety isn't being made a priority.

ultimately while i am not comfortable with what phlo did, the violation is well within site rules. the discussion on how site rules are applied is a separate one, but bullying users isn't cool. although, while you shouldn't go out of your way to attack other users, no one can force you to be friendly to someone you aren't comfortable with. do not bully, but if you really don't want to talk to phlo you don't have to.

i don't think he had malicious intent and i would be fine having him in my games, but i completely understand why others may not feel the same.

tl;dr bullying bad don't

(i also don't want to promote elitism as some of the best users on this site have accounts that are like 2-3 years old. but i also like to flex my em old man status so here we are *throws on robe*)

I second Meph's position on everything. However I think the important part is "...the discussion on how site rules are applied is a separate one" -

Imho there should be some kind of citizen's referendum in terms of moderation and site rules. Leveraging wisdom of the masses, incentivizing user activity, making the community a better place... the benefits are numerous. And this has been a very talked about problem, although moreso in main than here.

This council could lead to that. Maybe it could be the conduit between moderators and the community? Insofar as we can share our own views, our duty would be to uphold the major beliefs of the community and work with the moderators to see where we can find a common ground.

Also, I'm not sure why you have issues with people trying to squash unnecessary drama to begin with. We are trying to restore the site, and lobby, to its old glory under Alyssa's reign. We do not want to see bullying of users, or any injustice. Instead of giving us an opportunity to help, you are already persecuting us. As I've said before, if you do not like the advice we give, you do not have to follow it. We are commentators, not moderators.

I really don't understand how a prerequisite for giving good advice/being mature is to have an account thats a million years old, some of the most toxic people i've met on this site have been around for 5+ years, i don't understand the purpose of this council

To give some voice to the OGs of Epicmafia. Your time will come soon enough, be patient.

Agreed. I think the solution here is to not create "lynch mobs", but rather kick the user from your game if you do not like them. Bullying can have severe repercussions because you don't know what that person is dealing with irl. EM is an escape for some.

Isn’t this how unions work? Authority is given to those with seniority?

Better watch out Alyssa, I knew your communist sympathies would eventually bite you in the rear.

yeah ill join but i think that having an account around for this long is telling that old users DONT have good judgement

We are simply here to give our 2cents. Other users can take our advice, or simply ignore it. I just feel that older users should be looked to for advice on issues on the site.
