Shot in the dark was the best back when I played in training lobby, that setup was so fun
Fancy Pants and Shot in the Dark.
golb if you were owner again what setups would you pin
I haven’t posted at all in my own thread yet, so here we go.
I personally feel that while EpicMafia is definitely not in its prime right now, it’s in a pretty good state as of January 2018 and it’s on the upswing.
When I first started playing EM in a “serious” capacity, I came at what was probably considered a lackluster time in Sandbox. Cliques dominated the community, and in fact I made most of my early friends by congregating with people who were outcast. People have been complaining about the monotony of Sandbox games lately; in 2015, it was something else entirely. In the present, that’s not really much of a thing anymore: perhaps because of the dwindling number of visitors, but I think that it’s more of an atmospheric thing.
I come to EpicMafia for the game. I always have and probably always will unless something major changes. I’m perfectly capable of branching off of the site to communicate with friends, no chat box necessary (shut it down.) I do feel that the 12 player random setups get boring after a while, and that’s in part why I made Golbultima. New stuff is always welcome: site detractors have often said that we have too many roles, but if you ask me, we have an organization/UI problem, which thankfully sl0nderman has been trying to address. There are also major bugs that need fixing, and the fact that it’s almost been 10 years and the sui bug isn’t fixed is just sad.
I, too, am disappointed by Lucid’s inattention to the site, but I hold out hope that he will come back. He’s taken extended breaks in the past, and these days seems to only want site mods to deal with a lot of the issues/drama, which I get. Do I think he should pass the site on to someone else? I think he should either truly treat this site as a hobby and work on it from time to time or do that, yes. I think we all have a hundred ideas that could/should be implemented into the site, and having a semi-regular developer(s) would be really cool.
We’re getting there, folks.
If you want to play games where you don't want to get involved in drama or circlejerks, 12p closed role games in sandbox are usually pretty good. My other alternative is played a ranked game in main, because the playerbase is also pretty decent and fluid there. I tried to play a few vivor games in the past, but I never really liked them because I felt that people didn't treat me the same as regular vivor players. In any case, one of my friends is trying to get me to play a vivor game to prove to me that they're fun, so if I ever get to do that, I'll make sure to note down my experiences.
But that's basically it about the discrepancies between game types. The game itself isn't bad, and having a script is pretty fun at times. I do commend sl0nderman for suggesting changes to the game though because it's progress that makes us move forward.
Lastly, there are two users in sandbox who I feel deserve a shoutout because they always manage to put a smile on my face whenever they post things on the forums. YellowPear and Jimbei are always positive members of the community and I aspire to make threads like them. I think we should all try to use the forums as a more positive medium, as well as the chatbox. It's a small thing you can do to make a huge positive impact on the community.
Edit: Boy that was long. I never knew I could write so much about how I feel about the site.
This site is pretty good. I'd say it's better that other sites out there but I'm not really close with any other online community so I guess I really don't know.
Although it's been stated about a thousand times already in this thread, my advice to newcomers is to stay in the games and not start posting in the forums, etc. Sandbox games (although boring) will help you learn the roles and the people in those games are for the most part decent.
There are some sketchy people who live in the chatbox or the forums, but other than those, a lot of people are decent there too. I'd say that you should just protect your personal info and never give it out on here. It's not worth it, and I know way too many users who have been victims to doxxing. What's worse is that the scumbags who dox people are still running around free. Which brings up the issues with the rules here.
The rule system, while not perfect, seems to do an ok job at getting rid of bad users, the current mod team isn't doing much themselves. There are a few mods who I like because I think they're actually trying to improve the site, but a lot of the other ones only care about themselves.
The trick to having fun on this site is just to not get too serious about it. Just relax, play some games, meme a little on the forums.
Since I joined in 2014, I'm not really seeing much of a change. Drama comes and goes, new players arrive and old players leave, and thus the playerbase (and dramabase) becomes pretty fluid. This definitely helps to not get attached to the drama too much.
One thing that I once saw posted in a Main forum was someone (I think it was BecomeClear?) saying that about every month when they get too involved in forum drama, they go on a short hiatus to cool down and make sure EM doesn't become part of their personal life. That's some good advice right there.
The thing is Lucid has no reason to change the site, people are still filling his pockets. Until that changes it will be the same, I’m afraid.
better question
tumblr war when
as a reddit user this question must be asked
I reckon Golbolco should bring back the role of the day saga
Also TheGameGuy, Entil and ruiyang should become mods
Its cool but it needs more of the suggested roles and change some of the others
I was also asked, so here I am (wow so original)
I joined very late 2010 so yeah.
From what I've read I agree with what quite a few things people have already mentioned, particularly lozershus, sl0ner, ookami, and Nikki
I am more interested in the game aspect but the community aspect is obviously very huge and being an oldie it's always a pleasure to see other old users again.
I thought the community was going downhill at some point but I think it's actually getting better now (other than a particular cult). This might be due to the fact that the game is dying a bit so everyone has to be a bit nicer to actually keep a community going and I find there are less of cliques, at least in game, which is nice.
(Or maybe I just got used to filtering out stuff who knows.)
Probably what I've noted the most about the community somewhat recently is the step forward to try and make this site a better game site, which I haven't really seen since Lucid disappeared.
Sl0nder has some stellar ideas for the UI, Golbolco has good suggestions overall and so does cub and other users as well. (roles, mechanics, setup rotations, etc)
We've also finally started to sort of keep track of all the role interactions thanks to many people's help. I think the community is doing their part to make this a great mafia game but it really could be the go to mafia game site but we just need someone to be able to implement them...
New people (noavis) keep popping up so there's still potential for this site to grow, I think it just needs to be updated for them to keep coming back (and then bring other people maybe).
Overall: It's still going fairly well, game and community wise, but needs to be updated for sure.

the site would be better if lucid gave a sh/t but that isn't really something we can fix
Epicmafia has not changed much since I joined in 2012. Well, maybe main has a bit, but only boring people play main.
But sandbox is basically the same. There have been a few new roles, a few interesting new games to play. But the basic setups are still about the same.
I'm okay with this. I like something that's kinda constant. I like having a game to play where I don't have to give a .
I don't play as much as I once did. I also have a kid to take care of now, though, so... you know, life.
Anyways, if people want to make more roles, or add more games, or whatever, I'm okay with that. But 12man doesn't get old for me because it's always a little bit different.
its pretty sh*t for a dating site, ngl. 0/10

sandbox is cool if you dont spend more than 5 minutes a day in it
I'm sexually attracted to playing online games of mafia.
Even when I was a little kid I always knew that my eggplant emojis were always gonna be dedicated to mafia games...[read more]
Other than some bugs here and there the game seems alright (minus some sucky roles). My biggest complain is the mobile version, which sucks. As for the community i am a pretty recent user so i cant really say much, ive made some good friends here, and i can say there are some pretty good users around. There are also some less likable users but you can usually get around them by either kicking or ignoring them. Personally i believe dooze does a great job as owner (even if i disagree with some of the emotes, smh) but im willing to forget that thanks to chowder. As in every community, there are good and bad people, but to me, the good users outweight the bad ones, also hi golb :D
Moderation in Sandbox is fine. Dooze is a reasonably decent owner, and I enjoy her presence. Outside of sandbox, like in vivor and games lobby, I just don't see the point of having an "owner". The site mods seem decent as well, but I think they need more. Reports seem to get backed up a lot.
The game of mafia is still fun for me, aside from some unnecessary roles like cyborgs and zombies. It is functional, with some bugs here and there (hence why we need a new owner), and it is pretty much the only reason I come back to pass some free time that I have. I also enjoy playing with the friends I've made on this site. Don't get me wrong though, a new interface would be welcomed.
You asked, so here I am.
As some of you know, or don't know, I've been a user for over 7 years now (sad!). I've seen lots change over the years.
I miss when there were no split up lobbies, but I suppose with the rise of ORGs, and games, they were very much needed.
Its unfortunate that Lucid has pretty much given up on the site, as it always had more potential to grow (and still does). I'd like to see the site given to someone like Edark or cub; just passed on to someone who would happily pick up the slack.
With the rise of even more ridiculous cliques than usual, I fear the site will become more annoying than ever before. Sure, its a chatty community, but most troublesome users don't even play any games, and it really is taking a toll on what the site was all about to begin with.
The community is both dead and irritable as ever. I light up when I see an older user like myself enter the game because I know they're actually here to play and have fun. It's always nice to catch up with them and see how they have been.
Of course, with the bad, comes the good, and there have been plenty of good users that have come about.
Sandbox is toxic with the spam cult posts, and I wish that above anything else would be modded. We don't need to see the same "join our church" message seven times in a row. There's a lack of individuality there, and its a shame to see some users who were once fun to be around, become an annoying memelord, because that's what they think is cool. Newsflash: its not cool to be annoying, because that's the same exact reason why some users get kicked from everyone else's games.
I used to like EM but now i got reported for saying bad words so now it sucks.
