Hello Sandbox!

Posting here isn't something that I often do, but I have noticed people here are a lil more artistically inclined than the other lobbies, and are also more engaging and fun to talk to so I've decided to make this thread here.

At any rate, this is a long-term project created by someone who obsessed with film! It's Basil's Film Journal

Basically I'm going to list the films that I want to watch and organize them, and might post a hot take or two about movies I have recently seen. I hope to have written my first script by the end of college!

Lynch is such an auteur. I love how insanely innovative he is and I literally can’t believe that such a beautifully shot film came out in 1986

actually a lot of aspects of that movie are so shocking for an 80s film lol

letterboxd review of the day:

“A story about death, murder, loss, grief, aging, dementia, living skeletons, and deadbeat dads.

Y’know, a kid’s movie”

I mean when most of my thoughts here have been hot takes I loved this one enough to write a full fledged essay here so for what that’s worth... go see coco if you haven’t !

I’d say the flaws I put in are very nit picky though they did take me out of the movie for a SLIGHT SECOND. This movie was almost perfection for me and joins in canonical Pixar animation in my book

as far as negatives.. there was nothing that substantial besides a couple spoiler-y things. the movie throws kind of a curveball at some point that i truthfully saw coming a mile away, and the third act of the movie is where things started getting slightly less unique and a little more run of the mill (save for the spectacular final scene), and there’s a couple things about what was done with the villain that I would’ve liked different but found understandable given the nature of Pixar needing to cater to a child audience

all in all this was an unforgettable piece of cinema and honestly the positives far outweigh the negatives. I can forgive it’s VERY MINOR flaws just for the sheer personal impact it had on me with some of its themes and for the grandiose scope of it all. loved this

I don’t even know where to start with this review

this film’s thematic layers are about as gorgeously orchestrated throughout the movie as the animated city of the dead which is hands down the most jaw droppingly beautiful piece of animation I’ve seen this year. this is a beautiful, beautiful piece of animation that tackles death, loss, memories, music, following your dreams, building a legacy, being afraid of being forgotten, family, love, celebrity status, cultural barriers, tradition, forgiveness... there’s so much to unpack, and it’s all done with typical Pixar nuance

the universe these characters were in was strikingly Miyazaki-esque to me and I loved that. the land of the dead felt like a Mexican take on something straight out of Spirited Away and I can’t emphasize how enveloping and lush it was

I think the entire first and second acts of this movie are literally perfect cinema, and there are cultural aspects of this film that struck a heart wrenchingly strong cord with me on a really personal level. Some parts echoed some of my favorite older Pixar movies (a la ratatouille chef gusteau and de la cruz parallelisms early on and something about the climax reminded me of a certain Monsters Inc scene) but not in a distracting way that took me any where out of the film at all
