i mean, this is right, but to be clear, i'm aware that there was a cultural reason for gender roles that no long hold ground, but people still stick to them regardless, which is what i find silly
Genetically the average female is weaker than the average male and was less "equipped" for the hard labor of farming land, thus over the years females were told that their job is X and males were told that their purpose is Y (X being child birth, taking care of the house, cooking, while Y is doing hard labor or WORK)
because these day things are starting to change and in the western cultures the current work needed to be done can be done by male and female equally the statements above do not hold ground anymore. and then people like projectmatt start to wonder whats up with these "Gender roles" and where do these silly things come from..

My peen says I'm supposed to be tough and mean
to illustrate an example of this, i wore pink nail polish on my hands for about a week or two this semester to see how people would respond, and the amount of guys who were weirdly uncomfortable about it was kind of funny but also kind of depressing.
Do you think this is because of hatred and bigotry or because it wasn't considered normal? B/c there's a difference
nah i don't think there was any hatred/bigotry involved, it's just because it's an -abnormal- thing to do even though there's literally no reason why men shouldn't wear nail polish other than the idea that "it's what girls are supposed to do!"
maybe they didn't like the shade of pink

why would it be better if gender roles didnt exist, most of the population is very happy with this system.
i'm under the assumption that a system that doesn't have traditional gender roles (like men -need- to be super tough and strong, women need to be the caretakers), etc, would generally be a society where people would be more free to be who they are as opposed to what they assume they are -supposed- to do
but i understand that a society like that ever happening is v. idealistic
what people are supposed to do is what makes them happy. it's billions of years of evolution that decides gender roles
billions of years of evolution also created those gender roles in this first place whence before that there was nothing - so obviously changes like that can occur naturally.
the idea that not everyone fits perfectly into the gender roles of being masculine or feminine seems pretty easy to understand and agree with - so it can also be easily assumed that those that dont fit might feel some kind of turmoil and be unhappy
and with humans being a conscious species and naturally exhibiting some kind of empathy it seems normal for us to want to adapt and change of societal and cultural values to make our species as a whole happier, right?
does that line of thinking seem strange to any of you? it's cultural evolution not biological
you can throw out most notions of darwinism these days when dealing with humanity and i dont think making that assertion is far fetched at all

u should walk around in public for a week without nail polish on as a control to see if people are just uncomfortable around you in general

New question: is our baseline goal as a human to reproduce, and if so, is everything we do or think driven by that urge? If not, what else drives us to live?

@Thecol0nel I dont think you're in any way qualified to answer the "What people are supposed to do" its a bit more complex than you think so give it a little bit of an extra thought if you're capable of non-impulsive thinking

i would argue that a fair amount of people are actually miserable because they are making themselves commit to made-up gender roles when they would be far happier not doing those things, but i really dont want to open that can of worms ATM

OK guys and girls don't forget that God made Eve for Adam because he couldn't survive on his own... he made women for men b/c they need someone to keep them in check..... think about that one.....
