The Bible Thread

about 8 years

Ask anything. I will not answer you. I will give you God's answer straight out of the Bible.

"For all the things that were written beforehand were written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through the comfort from the scriptures we might have hope." - Romans 15:4

As time goes by, I will add important teachings to this opening thread, for ease of access to popular topics.

If you want to ask me personal questions, just PM me.

NOTES: 1.) I answer the questions in the order they were received. But if I feel that an answer I gave was either incorrect or not complete enough, I will definitely go back and revise it. 2.) I cite ALOT of scriptures, and when I do that, it's not so you can just assume that there's a scripture related to what I said. I want you to look it up yourself. You can do that easily by copy/pasting the cited scripture into the search field at: wol.jw.org Once you do that, you can view multiple translations by clicking the verse number, and you can see the chapter that the verse is from by clicking the link to the citation.

continued . . .
Besides, as time goes on, more and more people come to know God, and had the end come 10, 5, or even 1 year ago, how many lives would not be etched into God's memory, having dedicated their lives to him. In order for God to bring an end to this system of things, the world would have to be so wicked that it would be impossible for someone born in it to come to know Him.

We are not at that point yet. So the world lives on, slowly deteriorating to the point of annihilation, suddenly, shockingly, and the wicked will not even realize it is coming. Just as in the days of noah. (Matthew 24:36-39) "Therefore keep on the watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord is coming." - Matthew 24:42

The one universal truth, aside from the indisputable fact that there is a God, is that God has the right to rule.
"You are worthy, Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they cam into existence and were created." - Revelation 4:11

YHWH says

Imagine a teacher who is teaching a class how to solve a math problem. One student disagrees with the teacher and says he has a better way. So the teacher gives the chalk to the student to let him solve the problem in front of the class. This is what is happening right now.

God is the teacher. By allowing rebellious persons try and fail to rule themselves, he is showing that they are not able to do so, that they need him to rule them. Eventually this world will get to a point where it is going to destroy itself without divine intervention.
"there will be a great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world's beginning until now, no, nor will occur again. In fact, unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the chosen ones those days will be cut short." - Matthew 24:21,22
At that point he will intervene. Why does he not intervene before then? Because any onlookers(in heaven mind you, the angels eagerly await to see what the conclusion of the matter will be) will say, "You should have given them another chance! What if they would have tried something different? Surely there is a way to effectively rule that has not been tried yet. Yes definitely there was a way to prove you wrong, but you did not give them a full chance to do so." This is why even though Abraham was to inherit the promised land, he did not do so right away, because the people there had not become wicked enough yet for Jehovah to do away with them. That involves beliefs I have that exist outside of Bible teachings, so that goes beyond this thread and also goes beyond what I care to discuss.

Let me rephrase his question. Do you follow the Bible or believe that it is some sort of message from God to humankind?

The Bible has a lot of good ideas and teachings to live by, but is not the pure word of God. It is not the end all.

Yeah, with all due respect, fck all of your opinions.

If the bible can't explain the sin behind having breakfast for dinner, then I am STRAIGHT outta here. That's what really matters here, and if you say any different, you can leave.

Okay, now this is an interesting line of thought. The practical wisdom of the Bible is infallible?

Let me give you some biblical advice then, and you can tell me what you think of it.

Ezekiel 4:12 suggests eating food cooked over burning human feces.

James 5:13-15 suggests praying to be healed instead of going to a doctor for actual treatment.

Numbers 5:11-28 suggests you give your spouse holy water if you suspect she is cheating on you. If she gets sick, she was cheating.

Leviticus 14:3-7 suggests using bird blood to cure leprosy. I'm not sure if this is actually a violation of James 5 or not.

Matthew 19:12 suggests cutting off your pen!s.

Matthew 6:34 suggests not planning for tomorrow.

Matthew 5:29 suggests cutting off your hand or plucking out your eye if you think or act lustfully.

Mark 10:21 and Luke 12:33 suggest selling all of your possessions and giving them to the poor.

Luke 6:30 suggests not trying to get back anything that is stolen from you.

Matthew 5:39 suggests inviting someone to hit you again if they have already hit you once.

Matthew 5:40 suggests giving more than a court requires if they issue a judgement against you.

Matthew 5:41 suggests doing double of whatever you have been forced to do.

Matthew 5:42 suggests giving anything to someone if they ask for it.

Mark 11:24 suggests moving mountains by praying.

Without even reading the article, I can show you that all five of these things you mentioned are not accurate.

1) Evolution, Moses being the author of the Torah (JEDP), Jericho, lack of Herod's slaughtering (Herod died in 4BCE, look it up), Mark's description of locations is not accurate with first century Palestine, the tearing of the temple veil and earthquake were not recorded by historians, lack of Roman census, I think this is enough.

2) When I ask why the Bible is trustworthy, you can't respond by saying "because the Bible has candor and honesty." Please pause for a minute and think about this.

3) I already provided an extensive list of a single subject that shows the Bible doesn't have internal harmony. But I'll give a few more. 2nd Kings says Jehoiachin was an 18 year old king. 2nd Chronicles says he was 8. 1st Kings says Solomon had 2000 baths. 2nd Chronicles says he had 3000. 1st Kings also says Basha died in the 26th year he was king. 2nd Chronicles says he invaded Asa in the 36th year he was king. Zombie king?

4) You think the Bible is scientifically accurate? Job 9:6 says the Earth is flat and held up by pillars. In the same book it says God rolls out the map of stars every night to light the night sky over the dome of the Earth. In Genesis day and night were created before the sun or stars. It also says there was vegetation before the sun. It says the moon is a lesser light than the sun. 2 Chronicles and 1 Kings say that Pi is actual 3. Revelation says the stars are actually sky specks that will fall to Earth when Jesus comes back. Ecclesiastes says the sun revolves around the Earth. Matthew 27:52 says the dead came out of their graves and walked around the city. What is with all the zombies?

5) Fulfilled prophecy? There are lots of places where Jesus says this (Revelation, Mark, Luke, Paul repeats this too), but in Matthew he said to a crowd that some of them will still be alive when Jesus comes back. More Zombies?

In addition, it's practical wisdom is infallible. I keep on following what it says, and the only time I ever regret what I do is when I don't listen to it. Therefore, my recommendation is to actually do what the bible says, and see how things work out for you. God himself assures you that it will be good for you, saying "Happy is the one who does not walk according to the advice of the wicked, and who does not stand in the path of sinners, and does not sit in the seat of scoffers. But his delight is in the law of Jehovah, and he reads His law in an undertone day and night. He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, a tree that produces fruit in it's season, the foliage of which does not wither. And everything he does will succeed." (Psalm 1:1-3) Most truly I tell you that whoever earnestly studies the bible and desires to do God's will, will find unimaginable joy in doing so, just as I have :)

If you still wanna go into all that other stuff you were talking about, then lol ok, you'll just have to explain their ideas to me, because I don't know anything about it. :P

Also, I swear to Jehovah that I'll start talking about Greco-Roman cynicism, Hellenism, the Gospel of Thomas Jesus movement, and the Q communities if you gloss over this question with a crappy answer.[/quote]I'm gonna give you a link to an article that deals with this very subject. It briefly goes through 5 particular things: 1. Historical Soundness, 2. Candor and Honesty, 3. Internal Harmony, 4. Scientific Accuracy, and 5. Fulfilled Prophecy.
https://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/g200711/trust-the-bible/

Now let me tell you why personally I think the bible is reliable: Personally I just felt that everything in the bible made sense, and when it didn't, I was ably to do some research and better understand the situation.

How can I say that everything made sense when many people think that the bible is extremely confusing? Well, take a look at an explanation of the bible on 1 page: http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1001061221

Jehovah God having the right to rule is really the main point, and the rest of the bible is really just an explanation of how he proves his point.

give me three reasons why at this exact moment i should NOT shove a cactus up my a$$

Proverb 22:3 says "the shrewd one sees the danger and conceals himself, but the inexperienced keep right on going and suffer the consequences." You know FULL WELL what will happen if you do such a thing, so don't do it.

If you go on and do this, are you being reasonable? (Philippians 4:5)

Deuteronomy 14:1 Says not to cut yourself for a dead person. Evidently it was a practice in other religions to cut themselves in times of distress. Notice the prophets of Baal at 1 Kings 1:28.(that whole account is very entertaining, and one of my favorites to read. Elijah was such a boss.)

Additionally, I will be very disappointed in you . . . so please, stay away from cacti in this regard.

LOL not at all :P

Christians are not bound by laws that govern the time or type of food eaten, with the exception that they may not eat blood. (Genesis 9:4;Deuteronomy 12:23;Acts 15:29)

As far as I know, nothing in the holy scriptures mentions the time of day which things were to be eaten, but it does mention specific days, such as passover, which wouldn't necessarily be relevant, except that jewish days start and end on sundown, so if someone was eating the passover meal before sundown, it may have been considered offensive, but I was unable to find a specific scripture on that. It was likely not an issue because you would be having it for dinner, and why would you eat dinner before sundown unless you lived by one of the Poles?(the isrealites did not) It did however say that people were not allowed to keep the passover sacrifice to eat the next day. (Exodus 12:10)
