The Bible Thread

about 8 years

Ask anything. I will not answer you. I will give you God's answer straight out of the Bible.

"For all the things that were written beforehand were written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through the comfort from the scriptures we might have hope." - Romans 15:4

As time goes by, I will add important teachings to this opening thread, for ease of access to popular topics.

If you want to ask me personal questions, just PM me.

NOTES: 1.) I answer the questions in the order they were received. But if I feel that an answer I gave was either incorrect or not complete enough, I will definitely go back and revise it. 2.) I cite ALOT of scriptures, and when I do that, it's not so you can just assume that there's a scripture related to what I said. I want you to look it up yourself. You can do that easily by copy/pasting the cited scripture into the search field at: wol.jw.org Once you do that, you can view multiple translations by clicking the verse number, and you can see the chapter that the verse is from by clicking the link to the citation.

So why all the confusion? It comes from the fact that many modern bible translators, have removed God's great and holy name from the text it was written on some 7000 times. It was in fact spoken about at Jeremiah 23:27 which says "They intend to make my people forget my name." In reference to the false prophets of that day.

But what is God's name? "I am Jehovah. That is my name." - Isaiah 42:8

Does God want his name to be remembered? "This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation." - Exodus 3:15
So clearly God wants us to use his name forever. He doesn't want us to forget it.

Deuteronomy 4:2 says you must not add to the word nor take away from it. Yet they removed arguably the most important part.

So how can anyone hoping to learn about God read from a translation that has removed his very name? This is why I use the New World Translation. The 2013 revision is very easy to read, and has restored God's name in every location known to date.

If you are reading a bible such as the king james, which is written in Middle english and difficult to understand today, It is no wonder that you think the bible is difficult to understand. I have actually found the bible to be quite easy to understand. Don't believe me? Here's what the bible is about, on a single, simple page. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1001070221

How then are we to view Jesus christ? A couple titles shared by both Jehovah and Jesus are 'Lord' and 'Savior'. It is perfectly fitting to say that both of them are lord and savior, but they are in different ways. Jude 25 shows the relationship by saying "to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord". Many times in the scriptures when it speaks of Jehovah and Jesus doing things together, it mentions that things are FROM Jehovah and THROUGH Jesus. This shows that although Jesus is being used by God to accomplish his will, God is really the one doing it.

"There is actually to us one God, the Father, from whom all things are and we for him; and there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and we through him."

As Jesus said: "I do nothing of my own initiative; but just as the Father taught me, I speak these things." (John 8:28) This is truly how it is with a father and a son. The son imitates the father because he loves him and wants to be like him. "Whatever things that One does, these things the Son does also in like manner." (John 5:19)

Just a comment, Whitepimp. Many sects believe God and Christ are different, while some believe they are the same. In the Old Testament, Lord/God is used to refer to Jesus in some parts and "God the Father" in other parts. That's why it seems there's a discrepancy. Christ is the "God of Israel" whereas they refer to "God the Father" differently at times.

TL;DR: The Bible is one big confusing sh*tfest and I think the only way to ever know wtf you're doing if you're religious is to pray and hope God guides you as you see guiding.

I actually made a post about this on the lobby wall a while ago, shame I can't just look back a few months to find it :/

Anyways it went something like this:

The bible is actually quite clear about who Jesus is, and Who God is.

Who is Jesus? "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation" - Colossians 1:15
So he is God's first creation.

As for God, he has no beginning, but has always existed. (Psalm 93:2, Habakkuk 1:12)

Jehovah(God's name) and Jesus are often referred to as The Father and The Son. Comparing the two, the scriptures say, "The Father is greater". - John 14:28

The God we worship is also Jesus's God, for he also said "I am ascending to my Father and your Father and to my God and your God." - John 20:17
So the fact that Jesus has a God shows that he is not God.

smh, why does it seem like some christians believe in the sinfulness of homosexuality more than god. the explanation is that someday a gay christian couple will love god so much that they will stop loving each other? yikes

The love for each other will never stop. Truly, I wish that all humans loved each other as much as good marriage mates do. However, their love for God will allow them to respect the marriage arrangement, and not engage in homosexuality.

But honestly, if not for love of God, how could we stop any of the addictive harmful practices prevalent today such as gambling, smoking, or ? Yet millions have done so. Why? Because God helps them. He will help all those who call on him in truth. (Psalm 145:18) If you ask for God's help, truly believing,(for all those who call on him must believe that he exists, and is able to help them - Hebrews 11:6) he WILL help you.

So let's take the example at Jonah 3:10. Summarizing the book of Jonah, the Ninevites are wicked people that offend God so much that he wants to wipe them from the face of the earth. Since Jehovah never does anything without letting people know about it(Amos 3:7), he decides to send his prophet to tell them they will be destroyed. The Ninevites repent of their wicked ways. Therefore God did not destroy them.

The point? If anything, this just shows how constant and unchanging he really is. He never allows the wicked to remain, and never destroys the righteous. It is exactly as is written in Ezekiel 18. A beautiful chapter, but I will quote a few sections.

"When someone Righteous abandons his righteousness and does what is wrong and dies because of it, he will die for his own wrongdoing. "(26) "'Do I take any pleasure in the death of a wicked person?' declares the Sovreign Lord Jehovah. 'Do I not prefer that he turn away from his ways and keep living?'"(23) "I do not take any pleasure in the death of anyone, so turn back and live."(32) "When someone wicked turns away from the wickedness that he has committed and being sot do what is righteous, he will preserve his own life. When he realizes and turns away from all the transgressions that he has committed, he will surely keep living. He will not die."(27,28)

Because our God Jehovah is like this, we have full confidence that he will never change, that when we continue to do what is right, even though we sin unintentionally, he will overlook our faults and see that we do want to please him, and he will do so, rewarding our efforts, as he has done over and over again, not just for me, but for all his servants past and present.

This goes along perfectly with what is written in Malachi 3:6(old testament) which says "I am Jehovah, I do not change."

Some people say that God has changed. They are going beyond what is written. (1 Corinthians 4:6)

I wrote out a fairly long argument, but I deleted it all and decided to list some Bible verses instead. Please observe the following scriptures in the context of an clearly mutable, but claimed immutable being:

Jonah 3:10 - And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Malachi 3:6 - "I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

For bonus points, please tell us how a perfect being "repents". Who does he repent to? Why does he repent? How can he be perfect if he repents?

I will actually start here. The hebrew word nacham meaning 'feel regret' is often translated repent. Both regret and repent mean 'feel sorry about'. When we talk about God being repentant, it is not because of any mistake on his part. Rather, any change in his actions has to do with the change of the target.

Think of it like this:
Imagine that God says that 1 + 2 = 3.
But let's say that someone changes the 2 into a 4. Does 1 + 4 = 3? No. Now that the circumstances have changed, 1 + 4 = 5. Was there any mistake made? No. Was the answer ever wrong? No. It is two different equations with two different solutions.

In this same way, God changes the end result of people based on how THEY change, not because he is changing.

Common misconception, God is NOT all loving and all forgiving.

"He hates anyone loving violence." - Psalm 11:5

Satan says

the old testament was the OG god and the new testament is the god where they want to include other doubters of their religions and maybe get them to believe in their god. BASICALLY it was just a conversion tactic.

just like how the crusaders were told they could do anything they wanted and they would be forgiven. it was a tactic to get people enlisted and it's despicable.

Actually Old testament was Written in Hebrew and Aramaic and was written Before Jesus was born, while the New Testament was written in greek, after jesus was born. It was written in greek so that it could reach a wide number of people, as the greek empire was vast and flourishing at the time.

However, even though it is always the objective to get everyone to serve God, converting everyone and putting quantity above quality is a catholic thing, not a biblical thing. To give you an idea of how God feels about mass conversion, he killed everyone on earth except EIGHT people. (2 Peter 2:5) So really, God cares about quality worshippers, not the quantity.

That being said, they are totally the same God, this is why Jesus and the apostles quoted from the OT so much, because the old and the new are connected and work together to reveal God’s purpose.

I was telling him that if he wanted to not be ignorant about my religion that he had to do it himself. I think you missed what I was referring to, hence this unrelated post you made.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
