I've heard its great, you travel around the world and get to meet a lot of people.

ugh, sounds like a nightmare unless it is unleniently full of people you know
hostel sounds like hostile which makes me think that they are murder houses
hostels are reserved for cool people

generally you just get a bed, not a room.

Hostel is the same as Hotels but the 's' is shifted three spaces over :)
