but that doesn't make sense. if the afterlife is eternal, your current life is a essentially a flash of time before you live your real "after"life. why would life matter if it was so short?

The God who created this world is perfect. We are not perfect. The one true God is just. Because he is completely just, he will not let any sin go unpunished. You and I have human standards. We don't see the big deal about telling a white lie or stealing a piece of candy. All sins are an abomination to God. God's standard is moral perfection in word, in thought, and in deed. Of course, none of us are perfect. This could be hard to understand or come to terms with, but because we have sinned we deserve eternal separation from God who is perfect.
This is where God's love comes in. God loved the world so much that He sent his only Son to sacrifice Himself to pay for all of our sins. This can also be difficult to understand. Jesus Christ became a man to lay down his life so that all sinners, me and you, could have eternal life. Consider this; if you were the only sinner on the entire earth, Jesus would have still have laid down His life on His own accord to save you from your sins. Jesus' death was completely voluntary and necessary. If He did not sacrifice Himself, we would still be punished rightfully by a God who is completely just.
In order to receive salvation and eternal life, all we have to do is trust in Jesus as our savior. We have to trust in Jesus alone. We must admit that we are not perfect. We must admit that we can not go to heaven on our own good merits. Give your life to Jesus and obey God's commandments.
