Same Sex Marriage/USA

almost 10 years

The United States Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states. This is wonderful; I'm so happy!

I am so blessed to be able to see this in my lifetime. This is the end to legal discrimination. Color, race, gender, sexuality.

This is not the end of anything. This is just a step in the right direction. People of color and women are still struggling.

im talking in a general legal perspective.

Women are now allowed to vote and are no longer considered "good for nothing" (we have jobs, right to education, etc)

We apologized (And tried to make up for) discriminating against Japanese when putting them in internment camps.

Blacks are no longer slaves.

Gay individuals can get married.

There is still discrimination, yes. But from a legal perspective without nitpicking, it's a great thing to be celebrated and we should be proud that this even occurred in our lifetime.

This is a HUGE step in the right direction, a step which all other steps will stem from. I believe this is a victory that should be celebrated and not forgotten. It's true that there is still a long way to go, but progress is progress. And I strongly believe that this simple act will help end discrimination in general.

I think what's really important is that most children in the U.S. Born today or under the age of 6 will grow up with a different mindset as gay marriage, will for them, have been a fact of life most of their lives and will be normal. Hopefully this will give future generations of lgbt people a better accepting and tolerant environment

i think we could start by passing laws that actually matter, like telling families that they can't throw out their children until they are legally adults

As much as this is a change in the right way, you have to realize that this in no way changes the mind sets of people fighting against such issues. This may even trigger more acts of hatred and violence now that it's not in their favor. There is and will be more discrimination. It is a taught behavior. The way to counter it is to continue advocating for love rather than malicious antigay lifestyle. There needs to be a change in teaching, as well as law. The law may have been changed, but nothing else has changed yet.

I don't really want to take away from this being a step in the right direction for gay people though.
