Meh, it displayed how self-critical teenagers can be in a really realistic way, I think. I could relate to the guy a lot, even when he was being sort of a douche (which is a moment when I'd go like "oh man is that how I sound like?").
Plus they incorporated a bunch of really cool subtleties as far as the references and the appearances of supporting characters were concerned. Great effort.
They also went a long way in making the whole "filmed over 12 years" thing a subtle narrative tool that helped immerse you in the story as opposed to an overblown in-your-face stylistic device.

Whiplash was very special, I disagree wholeheartedly. I won't repeat myself so just check my in-depth thoughts post.
it honestly comes down to two unlikable people, one who isn't even unlikable in any interesting way and the other who's just a walking trope, yelling at eachother while the narrative takes an unlikely bend -- after the post-car crash band scene the movie just plummeted.
