Prayer is for our benefit, in order that God becomes more real to us, therefore bettering our relationship with him.
James 4:8 - "Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you."
Think about this. Have you ever seen someone who needs help? (of course) Now let's say that they really need your help. If they think that they can do it on their own, refusing help, why would you help them? But when they realize the need to ask you for help, you are happy to do so, because you have pity for them, knowing they cannot do it themselves. And you are happy to do it.
Likewise, many people prove by their actions that they think they do not need God. So why would God help those who think they do not need him? He wouldn't. Especially since the whole reason we are in this mess is because of the very issue of people thinking that God does not have the right to rule mankind, but that they are better off ruling themselves. LOL look what that got us into. So in order to get help from God, we must pray to him. Anything that you perceive as help from God that was received without prayer, is mere coincidence, or a worst case scenario, a gift from the devil in order to get you to think that you do not need God.
