Inappropriate Content Violation

over 10 years

Hello All,

I just wanted to post this as we have decided to make a new Inappropriate Content Violation. Given the recent AdSense violations the site has received, and that lucid is in the process of appealing this violation as well as possibly looking into alternative sources of ad revenue, we need to clean up the site as a whole and strictly enforce their guidelines.

This rule has been rolled out to serve an immediate need as we make through this transition. Mods have been instructed to be lenient in the coming days and weeks as this new rule gains awareness and as the paradigm shift begins. That being said, any community and moderator input on the language of this rule would be greatly appreciated.

We'll be giving out mostly verbal warnings, notes for now (especially to those who are unaware, of course), but moving forward we will start enforcing the violations more strictly.

I'd like to give shout outs to gistofeverything for the language of the ruling, and Giga for drafting up the disciplinary scheme.

  • Posting content to any part of the site that could be considered derogatory, vulgar, or slanderous anywhere on the site, including but not limited to the forums, comments and games. This includes, but is not limited to: swearing, off-site links, and inappropriate images. Inappropriate content that is found on the site will be deleted with or without prior notice. Please review this topic for more information about what is considered inappropriate: https://epicmafia.com/topic/61808

Riddler, this is lucid's site and how he wants to run it. This is what it's come down to with the allegations against the site filed in Riot and fruitoftheloom's reports. It's awful and I'm not happy about it. This is what lucid wants for the site. Whether it is stricter than Google or not isn't the point, the point is that this is how lucid wants to do things.

And in case you didn't get that here it is a few more times.

Google Adsense TOS does not care about singular use, occasional use, moderate use, or even relatively often use of profanity. They certainly don't care about any words you can say on television. They care about context, they care about extreme over use and sexually implicit and explicit content.

We're running this site in line with Google's standards from now on. I'm sorry, Riddler. I don't want it to be this way, but that's the direction I've received and it's how we're going to be monitoring it from now on. I'm talking to lucid about the possibility of adding an automatic censor (ie won't let you post if you use certain words)

It's not fun, but this is what is happening.

You're not listening.

You are not running the site in line with Google's standards right now. You're going OVERBOARD.

And adding an automatic censor is stupid. If anything it should be a toggleable censor that blocks words for anyone who has it turned on and guests. Don't ruin it by suggesting one that blocks your posts.

I'm getting mad that the moderators and lucid are completely incapable of understanding what google doesn't like and are enforcing censorship on us because of it, and that there is no line of communication open with lucid to try to knock some [redacted] sense into him.

Giving violations for singular uses of profanity that is no longer censored by the FCC is insanely over the top.

Start being more clever with your insults and you won't have this problem.

You can say it on EM if you can say it on TV. Stop trying to make this a police state because you are completely incapable of interpretation and are incredibly over-paranoid.

Google Adsense TOS does not care about singular use, occasional use, moderate use, or even relatively often use of profanity. They certainly don't care about any words you can say on television. They care about context, they care about extreme over use.

"You are a di--" would be acceptable. "Suck my d---" would not be.

Single uses of words are NOT in violation of the TOS.

And what makes even less sense about this is that we've basically accepted that we're not going to be using adsense anymore and will be finding another ad service. GUESS WHAT? Other ad services ARE NOT AS STRICT AS GOOGLE. And Google isn't even this strict.

Use some [redacted] sense, jesus [redacted] christ.
over 10 years
NO, BRONTO. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE STRICT ABOUT IT.

YOU NEED TO BE STRICT ABOUT EXCESSIVE USE AND SEXUAL CONTENT. INTERPRETATION AND CONTEXT: YOU ARE ALL COMPLETELY INCAPABLE OF IT.

I sent an email to lucid, hoping to get an update. You have to understand, for the time being we need to be strict about it. It's a [redacted] situation, but we have to cope with this until we sort out our issues with AdSense or any other alternative ad services we may get.

Just bear with it for the time being.

Got a "last verbal warning", telling me that i'll get a violation if i do it again, from laurie for a singlar use of the s-word in the video games forum in the following context:

"final fantasy music went to s-word after nobuo left."

This is ASININE. This is so incredibly over the top that i might actually consider leaving, because this is straight up censorship.

For the last time, AND LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY THIS BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET IT THROUGH TO YOU:

GOOGLE TOS AND ADSENSE TOS MONITOR EXCESSIVE PROFANITY. NOT SINGULAR, OCCASIONAL, SPARING, MODERATE, OR EVEN RELATIVELY OFTEN PROFANITY. EXCESSIVE. AND IN CONTEXT, MOSTLY FOR SEXUAL USE.

AND YOU CAN SAY S-WORD ON TV, YOU CAN SAY IT ON EPICMAFIA.

Yeah. That. ^^

Laurierose, you are not the cyber police, I am not going to take down my twitter username because it's a TWITTER NAME. twitter names are twitter names, not epicmafia names, not me calling someone names, not vulgar in any way. i dont think you understand that. please stop overstepping your bounds as moderator! THANKS!

hell and damn aren't really considered vulgar by anybody, and google's TOS states something along the lines of excessive profanity, so that should be fine. saying hell isn't going to get the site shut down
deletedover 10 years
Alright so cursing can get you a violation, right? What counts as vulgar language- because I'm highly religious and since hell, damn, etc are in the bible, I don't consider them vulgar. Anyway, yeah. I just don't wanna get a vio xP

epicmafia's violence is no difference between the cartoon violence in video games and it's 100% not what the issue is about. the problem is the stuff being said in games and on the forums, and the whole vulgarity debate is just precautionary measures until we know if we get AdSense back or not. lucid isn't going to rename every single mafia-related aspect of the game just because it's "violent content," because it isn't. it's about as violent as stomping on goombas in mario
over 10 years
The problem is that we think ... oh this just applies to the ads that are being displayed, but technically when you read the WHOLE thing it also applies to the content that the site promotes. And in advertising the definition of promotion is anything visible. NOT just something that is shed light on in a positive way.

"Sites displaying Google ads may not include:

* Violent content, racial intolerance, or advocacy against any individual, group, or organization."

Mafia is a game of 'murder' hence we go to a graveyard. Last time I checked ... murder is a violent action. The problem is that they keep using the words Ads Advertising, but it is more broad than just that when they switch to the words "promote and promotion."
