Now this is where it gets tricky, so focus. You're going to learn the roles in the setup you're playing. To do that, you'll look at the funny looking icons on the upper left part of your EM screen. Read each role and prepare for the game. If you can, read the strategies too, which are located on a button near the icons.

Once the game starts, you have to play according to your side, town or mafia (the black icons). Town wants to lynch all mafia, because they all have families and friends and love their own lives. Mafia wants to kill a lot of innocent townies. The devils! There are also thid party roles, but you don't care about the right now, you want the basics.

Anyways, if you are pr (power role), you have a night action in which you choose someone. For example (classic mafia, the most common setup), as Cop, you'll know if they're mafia or not, if you're doc, you'll save them from being killed by mafia etc. If you're mafia, you kill at night and make townies think you're town. Usually, you do that by counter-claiming (cc) cop. That means, claiming you have an inno (innocent, a townie) or a guilty (mafia). Everything else is personal strategy.
