If I were forced to choose between the two of them I’d choose episodes 25 and 26 because, as i said in a reply to an anonymous ask just now, I love the statement of how important solidarity, community, love, friendship are, I love Shinji’s final speech which all hinges on this rhetorical but that connects “I may hate myself” to “I’m worth living!” It’s so important to me and I think that transition is so exquisitely handled and so necessary to have. But I wonder if we can ever detach the two; I think that they are perfect as a destabilization of the notion of a “canon” at all (i.e. there being a “canon” Evangelion ending, one homogeneous and authentic “archive” of Evangelion’s truths in its universe) and instantiate what Azuma calls the grand nonnarrative of a database model of narrative.
