to buy gifts or even have time to make something meaningful for the people i care about these holidays, am i just going to be considered the a'sshole this year or what? ive never been in this spot before. i mean i can probably transfer people a dollar in bitcoin as a "surprise!" and make it seem like they're soon gonna be rich

Here's a non-mathy way:



You would need some translucent plastic, like cellophane, for the bombs. The grey is just all of the covered grid cells, and you reveal a cell by removing its cover. On the left you see what it looks like beneath the covers: a bunch of 3x3 cellophane squares with dots in the middles. The dots are bomb squares, and the surrounding red squares are what you use to determine how many bombs are in the proximity of a chosen cell. The darker the color, the more bombs there are.

You can randomize it by cutting each column of the board into its own strip, glue on the bombs for each strip, and then glue the strips back together onto a new board while it faces away from you.

On the minesweeper paper thing, is it a requirement that you use paper mechanics? Or is using a mathematical function that returns 0 or 1 based on an input seed and coordinate positions okay? If you have that then you could conceivably make another function that returns the surrounding mine count for a grid position as well.

Of course you'd have to do all of this math by hand, so it might take a while to finish a game....

Yeah I'm thinking about it now too without using the cheap tricks and it doesn't too easy.

But I can't tell if it's impossible.

but that would create a new constraint for randomizing it without looking, since it seems at first glance like you'd need to get the whole board at once, moreso than if it were just about placing a certain number of dots. actually let me think about it'

oh also i got derailed into trying to figure it out solely through probabilities rather than placement during that spastic session at some point, iirc


Yeah if we could omit the paper-puncturing and the blind placement steps that would be ideal.

Yeah you have to be careful though. If you report it, they have no incentive to pay you. If you tell them there's a security flaw, and you've used it without getting permission first, they can still press charges even if you have the best intentions.
