RolePatrol Comprehensive Suggestion

almost 8 years

We currently have three special usergroups on Epicmafia:

  • Mentors , who help introduce new players to the game
  • Moderators , who handle reports and general moderation
  • Role Mods , who usually manage cheating investigations

The Role Patrol is a fourth usergroup specializing in role and setup development and quality assurance. Aside from designating users who might be able to help with role revision similar to mentor designation, users would have some of the following abilities to assist the site...

_

Recommending Roles

Similar to favoriting roles, the Role Patrol can mark suggested roles as "Recommended" like such:

Recommended roles can then be viewed through a filter in the Suggested role list for you (Lucy) to read through and implement or request clarification as you see fit the next time you feel like creating new roles.

Most recommended roles will be jointly agreed upon and thoroughly dissected by the role patrol, saving you the work and making sure an "interesting" role isn't mistaken for a "practical" one.

_

Setup Verification

Taking advantage of another new feature, the Role Patrol would have the ability to verify and unverify setups. This allows the group to leverage some of the moderators' tasks of weeding out pointfarm setups and verifying recently updated setups.

_

Role Wiki

In lieu of the beloved onsite wiki, a new feature which would greatly help new players understand and learn about roles and their interactions with other roles would be the Role Wiki, a section of each official role page formatted in markdown and editable by role patrol members detailing role function, interactions, and bugs like so:

regardless of what the role mod group was made for, this is what it is now

i dont think it even has any role-related powers so it doesn't have to be modified in any way

ehhhh its 10am and I haven't slept since yesterday and I don't really feel like getting into this any further so here's maybe my last post on the subject

You've gotta understand that role mods were originally created for overseeing roles, specifically custom roles. Meaning that they had/have some power over which custom roles get activated. Something that you might want under what you want to call a "Role Patrol". Several months ago while lucid was absent from the site, the mods at the time had the idea of re-purposing the red stars that the role mods had for a cheating investigation squad. If lucid had been active at the time, perhaps they wouldn't have re-purposed the red stars in the first place. I probably shouldn't even need to explain this and yes I remember you being a "role mod" at a certain point so don't mention it.

But what I'm basically saying is that if you're gonna get lucid to implement stuff on the site in the first place, it doesn't really make much sense to continue using what was originally intended for overseeing roles as something else because he was absent at a certain time.

It sort of feels pointless to talk about this and you can disregard my posts if you don't care about what are basically aesthetic tweaks. I probably shouldn't have commented in the first place, but I should mention that I do support the implementation of ideas in this thread.

the role mod group is already used for and filled with "cheating investigators," it's cleaner to leave it alone and if anything rename it

youd have to move everyone over, move the icon over, move the features over

youre just overcomplicating things, leave the group alone and add a new group since this is a new group and we aren't talking about removing cheating investigators

also i just have to say, "lucid's end" isn't something that works on me. im speaking from a web developer's perspective already

Same amount of effort from lucid's end, with a cleaner result, not that it matters

youre saying "make this into that and add this from that" instead of "add this"

both of these statements produce the same result, one is two words

Your goal seems to be recreating the role mod role under a new name with more powers. If it were me, I would tack on all of the powers listed in this thread onto the existing role mod position.

Giving the cheater investigators the red star was an incentive for people to join the squad. And right now they've got some powers that would be more useful under what you want to call the role patrol.

It would be exactly the same amount of effort from lucid's end, and it would make a lot of sense.

tbh the role patrol is what the role mods should be and the cheater investigators should get their own usergroup

they have their own usergroup its role mods

it could be called something different but making another group thats a clone of an existing group and then changing an existing group is a bunch of extra work to achieve the same outcome

the only thing i suggest is that prospective candidates for the inaugural team come up with standards/criteria (an application perhaps?) and keep their minds open to both unranked and ranked play.

Yeah sure, we can do that.

implement this, lucid. it would be a great outlet for users looking for greater community involvement without having to opt for a position of standard site moderation/tutelage. the only thing i suggest is that prospective candidates for the inaugural team come up with standards/criteria (an application perhaps?) and keep their minds open to both unranked and ranked play.
