The story of an hour- Forgot the author, it was like two pages total. A wife grieved over the news of the death of her husband and ended her own life, just for him to come home and reveal he's actually not dead.

Need to read A rose for emily, something about a woman who doesn't pay taxes. :v

Also need to read that thing in the forest, about two girls who see slenderman and it haunts their memories for the rest of their lives.

The yellow wallpaper- Gilman, about a woman who is constantly kept in her house cause cult of womanhood and barely can do anything, she's not allowed to write but does anyways in a journal format as the ugly yellow wallpaper in her room is all she can ever go on about, as it becomes her focus of insanity from being confined for so long.

A jury of her peers- Glaspell, about a woman who murdered her husband for killing her bird. Spoilers lol. The story is about a bunch of guys trying to figure out why but couldn't, while the women did. They decided to hide the evidence because the guy was a real jerk and deserved it, in a sense they were a jury for the woman who did it because if she was actually in front of an all-male jury they wouldn't care for the motives, just the crime.

The Jewelry- Maupassant, about a middle lower class-ish guy who meets a beautiful woman that makes him extremely happy. She always buys fake jewelry as he always takes her for granted. After she dies he gets into debt and drinks and is in sorrow, he tries to sale the jewelry for a few bucks and finds out how much it's actually worth, as the truth is that his wife always cheated on him all along on rich guys who were their actual source of income.

[book reviews for midterm continued]
A good man is hard to find- Racist grandma is racist while her kids act like they're not, but when an outside force comes in the kids default to traditional values, as a bandit wipes them all out. Flannery is sayin the only way to get rid of people's racist values is getting rid of them all.

Good country people- Same author, a woman who's an atheist meets a bible salesman. She has a prosthetic leg. She has a super fake personality as she tries to act innocent while at the same time trying to seduce the guy, in a sense. The guy asks to see her leg and he steals it, saying his religiousness was just a gimmick. I don't remember the main point luls

Everything that rises must converge- Racist mom is racist, her son acts liberal but in reality he's just using it as a tool of spite against his mother because he wants to make her mad.

Where are you going, where have you been?- A self centered teen girl gets a reality shock when a guy stalks her to her house and starts to manipulate her into his hands, teaching the loss of innocence to readers. By Oates

Sonny's blues- A guy's brother is thrown into jail for doing drugs, as the guy gets a reality shock. He refuses to talk to his brother until his daughter dies, as they start writing to each other and go through their childhood. Once his brother Sonny gets out he brings his brother to the Jazz club and starts playing music, the sound reflecting his sorrow as the main character finally realizes how hard it's been for his bro. By Baldwin

A&P- Three girls in bikinis walk into a store, walks clockwise instead of counter-clockwise to symbolize them going against cultural norms. The main character who's a cashier objectifies the girls as he's happy about them going against the system. The manager comes out and tells the girls not to come back unless they're properly dressed so the guy quits out of disagreement for the girls treatment, when there was really no reason to quit and he just wanted to be noticed. By Updike

My short review of each story, note the further back it goes the less I remember

Cathedral- About a blind man who's been friends with this guy's wife, the guy dislikes that the blind man doesn't follow blind stereotypes but at the end realizes he was the one who was blind. By Carver

Lives of the dead- an anti-military story by someone who served, where only people who died as heroes were brought up in war stories because no one wants to think of all the people who died in vain. By O'brien

Flight Patterns- Native American guy leaves his raunchy household to go do business, on a taxi drive he learns about the driver who left his family and can never go back, as he realizes that he's been putting his entire life to his job and was missing what was actually important to him. By Alexie
