Strengths & Weaknesses

over 8 years

Hey everyone,

This is a thread for me to give you feedback on what I personally think are your strengths/weaknesses as a player. I will be as thorough and specific as possible, and you may agree with my summation or think it should be tossed into the garbage can of opinions. I'm doing this both to get feedback and to force myself to be more thoughtful as to what some contributors are to strong and weak play with the hope of incorporating fixes of my own.

If you post, ideally you should have played at least a few games with me (Tatami, Iverson, Empire, hundreds of others...) but if I'm not familiar with you I can spec your most recent games.

Finally, if you have played with me and would like to comment on my play, feel free to do so here. I may agree/disagree and give a response but I won't scream at you and call you wrong.

Iverson says

I just realized that's Sanctity and not Sanctify who is Devante (who I wrote it for)

Whoops, apologies. I had a hard time matching up the games on that account to what I remembered of Dev and this explains why.

When I first saw the account post a few weeks ago I had a momentary heart attack thinking someone hacked and was posting on an account I don't even use anymore. Even to this day I have to do a double take when I see it post

Hi tyler

Strengths:
-Tough to read based off of tone. You're pretty consistent with it.
-Some games you really kick into overdrive and can hardcarry as either alignment. Specifically, some of your scumgames are incredibly strong both in tone and deciding the right moves at the right times.
-Some games you have excellent insight. I consider my strongest aspect as scum to be in being extremely subtle with distancing/framing, and virtually never does anyone really see my true intent. A lot of the time you can, and I've lost more games to you hammering my partners than I would have against any other clear.
-You match up really well against players that tend to be less tonebased. I find it really difficult to push on you when I'm scum unless the clear is a player similar to me.

Weaknesses:
-Your mechanics need some work. It's pretty rare but I've seen you mess up on the basics in more complex setups.
-Your reads are about average and often I see you scumread things that are typically towntells or townread something that's really a scumtell. Advice I've given to everyone in the thread is simply to sit there and consciously ask yourself "Should I really ____read this?". It honestly works wonders because a lot of the time you don't think about it.
-Impressively inconsistent. A lot of games you can win it singlehandedly, having both piercing insight and good foresight. A lot of games you are simply uncarryable deadweight. Be more conscious of what caused a game to go right or wrong.
-You simply don't tryhard in most of your games. You tend to bring it in games with me and select others but tryharding is simply the best way to improve.

Sanctity says

Blister would like some feedback on his play, he also says that he had broke Gira's top comp WR with his gay account that had 70%. Even though he stacked tables with friends and cheated, he says it still takes skills

Please keep in mind it takes a really, really long time to go through games and type these up. I'm not doing them halfheartedly. I also don't have infinite time.

Will I get to you? Yes. Should you expect it instantly? I'm sorry that this has to be the case but no, it simply isn't possible.

Weaknesses:
-Too null on average. Works in your favor as scum but less so as town where you find yourself lynched more than you should.
-Reads are above average but not as good as other players of your caliber. I've often seen you tunnel on people who were pretty obviously town. Suggestion for this is to think to yourself after every misread why you tunneled them and why/how it turned out to be town (Not just them being stupid). When you don't have other players you really respect to reign you in (see above strength) this is dangerous.
-Generally your wins when you're not in the 1v1s or 2v2s listed earlier comes less from you making plays or carrying but you letting other players make mistakes. This is different from what I said for Jeff-Jeff either doesn't put in the effort or tries and for whatever reason takes the wrong way to try and carry. A lot of your wins come simply from being average and waiting for the other person to mess up. (See strength: letting yourself be carried) Playing conservatively is a strength, but a lot of the games you could win by being more aggressive or clever instead slip away.

I have listed or will list a few people as "Too null on average". What do I mean by this? Doesn't that mean you're unreadable? In a perfect world, yes, but players on EM are by no means perfect. The truth is that you can definitely seem leaning-town on average, even if you play with the same players a lot, simply by mixing it up more and finding more novel ways to towntell. I encourage you to find these and experiment, treating each game not as a consistency exercise but a towntelling exercise. The two are distinct-if you don't believe me, try it and see.

Strengths:
-Mechanically excellent, not just with basics but with the more nuanced situations (Top players are worse in mechanics than you think)
-Extremely tough read a lot of the time, virtually always I find you null.
-When teams are set (ex. 3 way 1v1, 5 way 2v2), you experience a big bump in skill and ability to towntell.
-Very flexible and willing to let yourself be carried. Way, way too many players have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the win, not so with you. You ask yourself-honestly-how close you are to the mark and go with other players if you get the feeling they're closer. Most people don't have this selfawareness.

Town game

Very good, you always(from my brief experience playing with you) back up your reads with logic arguments, which makes you a powerful blue. Though it wouldn't hurt you to losen up sometimes and play more carelessly as town, because...

Maf game
... you can become an easy read, when there are no scummy people in town and you just can't back up your reads with reasonable arguments. It's like your solid town play becomes a burden sometimes. Also, I don't think you ate too well, maybe you think it's lame, maybe not, but would help you from time to time.
Apart from that, solid scum play too, similar to your town play, it's usually the matter of how good your reads are and how do you back them up.
