hello sandbox i think it is time we have a discussion on gun control, specifically within the United States but also taking into consideration how other developed nations handle their gun control policies and how successful it is for them.

with mass shootings happening almost every day in the united states including the horrific one just a few weeks ago at pulse night club, there has been even more debate about gun control

some things to consider/questions to answer:

are republicans soft on the issue of gun control?

are non-gun owners uneducated about how regulated the firearms industry already is?

is the issue a mental health issue and not a gun issue?

mexico has strong gun control and high murder rates, us has liberal gun laws and a high murder rate, japan has strong gun control and low murder rate, Switzerland has liberal gun laws and low murder rate. UK and AU both outlawed guns and have an increased violent crime and murder rate. are guns really the problem?

should there just be a ban on assault rifles or should handguns be banned or controlled too?

also @ people who voted seriously on the poll to allow all guns. So are we just gonna allow that nutter down the road? Oh yeah and that junkie + his dealer. And we might as well just give everyone guns because f*ck it, why not the 16-year-old that was never even taught how to use a gun. Hey, I got an idea, lets just hand out guns to everyone who can give us like 500 bucks without any checks or training because then everyone is safe from anything... Yeah that is how it works right

There are plenty more cases, but instances where a gun is used for self-defense rarely get the national spotlight.

Alright, so guns stop guns is what you are saying, These people in mass shooting are not terrorists and I say most of them would have got their guns due to laws you have on guns, if you clamp down on the laws then the shooters don't even have a chance to get the guns so easily so the people don't have to stop them in the first place. What if on one of these cases a misfire happens or something goes wrong and the concealed carrier never has a chance to pull his gun before he is dead. Then you got another mass shooting on your hands. Just don't give them a chance to even get the guns so easily in the first place

guns are fairly strictly regulated in my country, and as such mostly kept off the streets.

funnily, the big problem is criminals breaking into the houses OF THOSE WHO HAVE GUNS in order to steal them. that's the most of the guns on the streets

Basically though any high caliber hunting rifle is sufficient to use as a sniper rifle, only difference is usually the scope is poorer quality.

it makes an awful lot of sense to me that someone should need a sniper rifle. you know, for when you can see a break-in coming a mile away. literally

Scotlands last shooting was Dunblane, a school shooting that was caused pretty much insane man that had allegations towards paedophilia. After that 1 we banned all handguns and clamped down our gun laws. You guys just still let these things happen, Maybe you think different. but due to none of these things really happening after Dunblane (except a killing spree/murder-suicide that happened in England, but we are talking bout Scotland here) I think it shows that these things happen because of the wide availability of guns in the US. You said that guns make it so police can stop others from doing things like shootings, but police never stopped the shooter before the officers died and they never stopped the shooting in Orlando before the people died. Maybe the guns do help the cops AFTER the things happen, but not before. We do have dedicated teams with guns for after/during things like this, but having guns won't help you stop things from happening before they do

More people die from their own gun trying to defend themselves than anything else also if you restrict guns and clamp down on it as hard as you can petty criminals don't normally get them. The evidence of this shows to me as here in scotland all guns are banned without a license (even air rifles now) and I have met many police officers that have worked for like 10-20 years that have never even had to use the batons they are supplied with.

Nope, I actually live out in the country so it would be way way longer. I'm using "I" as a stand-in for someone who lives in the city or something.

Average police response in my county is like 12-15 minutes.

Why would you expect them to be concerned with self-protection when the majority of the people on this site still live with their parents in an upper-middle class all white neighborhood? You're speaking with literal children here
