hello sandbox i think it is time we have a discussion on gun control, specifically within the United States but also taking into consideration how other developed nations handle their gun control policies and how successful it is for them.

with mass shootings happening almost every day in the united states including the horrific one just a few weeks ago at pulse night club, there has been even more debate about gun control

some things to consider/questions to answer:

are republicans soft on the issue of gun control?

are non-gun owners uneducated about how regulated the firearms industry already is?

is the issue a mental health issue and not a gun issue?

mexico has strong gun control and high murder rates, us has liberal gun laws and a high murder rate, japan has strong gun control and low murder rate, Switzerland has liberal gun laws and low murder rate. UK and AU both outlawed guns and have an increased violent crime and murder rate. are guns really the problem?

should there just be a ban on assault rifles or should handguns be banned or controlled too?

when ur talking about kids shooting up schools and u have some fcking nutcase suggest that teachers should be armed so they can shoot down the kids, that's when u know u have a failed society

the odds of ur home being invaded or whatever in america are significantly less than a kid shooting up his/her school. so if u think about it, ur just leaving a gun lying around the place for a kid to pick it up

failed society

"but guns were designed with a purpose. guns are designed with a purpose to kill"

My main problem with that argument: So are bows, but give a girl a bow and she's emulated the woman-empowering Katniss Everdeen. There are toys designed around this. And check out Gena Davis, she's awesome.

Target shooting is a worthwhile endeavor. It's an olympic sport (guns and bows)! You have to learn to compromise if you want to be taken seriously. For instance:

What about making target guns legal, but they must be kept in a assigned, locked cabinet at a target-shooting gun club. You still give me access to my hobby, while also expanding businesses and encouraging worthwhile hobbies.

2. Accessibility: I can walk into a wal-mart and buy a rifle or shotgun on the spot. Hand guns require a 3-day waiting period (unless you have a concealed carry permit). Why? Because hand guns are considered more dangerous and used in crimes. Why not require all firearm purchases to require a 3-day waiting period? I'd be ok with that.

3. The term "assault weapon" is stupid, and hurts gun control advocates. A semi-automatic .22lr rifle with wood stock and iron sights is what most people would think is perfectly fine for a Boy Scout to shoot. Replace wood with black plastic, 10 round magazine with 30 round magazine, and replace iron sights with a red-dot sight, and the general public considers this an "assault rifle". This is not a "military" weapon. It still has all the same capabilities as when the Boy Scout used it. Automatic (hold the trigger, keeps firing) weapons are already illegal (well, like suppressors, mostly). Do you want to outlaw "scary black rifles", or rifles just like the ones military use? Or rifles with buffer tubes?

If you want to support gun control, learn what you're talking about. Figure out what you really want to change, and focus on that. Do high-capacity magazines make mass shootings possible? You honestly think so? Or is it easy access to firearms? Or something else?

No, it's pretty bad how many people make a bunch of arguments when they don't know the grounds on what they're arguing.

I'm a reasonable gun owner. Having gone through the purchase process for both rifles, handguns, and obtaining a concealed carry permit, here are my thoughts:

1. Person-to-person sales should be required to be transferred through a federal firearms license holder ("FFL"). Right now, at least in my state, I can buy or sell any gun from/to anyone, no background check, waiting period, or paperwork required. This is the "gun show loophole", because gun show sales qualify as person-to-person (as opposed to sales in a store). There is no registration process, I couldn't register a firearm even if a wanted to.

tbf i'm glad that americans have such easy access to guns, because they're going to need them whenever trump becomes president and makes "the purge" a reality

best of luck to ya

It is our right to carry guns. Ban guns or get rid of the 2nd amendment and police can't carry guns either. Police must follow civilian laws. Then they'd have to put the police on par with the military.

Guns are not the problem. Our horrible mental health care and prison system is the problem.

other arguments against gun control are the fact that you can kill people with other objects too. paperclips, hammers, etc.. but guns were designed with a purpose. guns are designed with a purpose to kill. these other things that can be used to kill people are designed for entirely different things and while it is possible to kill someone with it, it's purpose is still for the specific non-lethal task like holding together paper with a paperclip or hammering nails and building stuff with a hammer...
