Why not? If we saw everything from Garnet's or Pearl's perspective we'd know way more about what is happening with the Diamonds, we'd probably know the stuff that Centipeedle wrote for the Gems (the way Steven interpreted her drawings makes me think he did it wrong, or at least didn't have the information to understand them correctly). Although I do see your point that the two are not the same thing.
I know the two are different things. It just reminded me of the Harry Potter fandom calling Harry an unreliable narrator and the fact that this allowed the fans to create fanfics (like Dean x Seamus, Hermione x Snape. Anything actually) which Harry could possibly not have noticed taking place just because he notices nothing. Which I think applies here pretty well. Also notice how the gems don't really tell a lot of things to Steven (at least I suspect they don't) just because he's a child etc.
that's not unreliable narrator though, since everything you see (even if centred around steven) is what is actually happening. It would be unreliable if we only saw steven's perceptions of things
He clearly is though? I mean sure we do not see through his eyes but he's the one every episode revolves around, and when it doesn't it's still some character explaining to Steven what happened in his or her life.
I mean it's kind of similar to Harry Potter and how he notices almost nothing in Hogwarts other than himself and the trio. Sure Harry himself is not narrating the story - it is narrated by a third person JKR - but the story still revolves around him 99% percent of the time, with 4 (I think) chapters where the narrator is not him.
ik i kinda miss the old monster of the week stuff but i also love the character developent episdoes idk
I find the plot and lore and stuff really interesting and cool and i wish we could know more, but I think that slow reveals (eg. pink diamond) are better and more effective than just exposition-y monologues all the time.
I don't think steven is an unreliable narrator... because he isn't the narrator..
It'd be really nice if all episodes of Steven Universe were action packed and exciting like this, not just like 3 episodes in total in a show with 101 episodes lol
P.S. It annoys the f out of me that the gems are keeping information away from Steven (which they clearly are) and that he's such an unreliable narrator
Actually, Rebecca has stated that Love Like You isn't being sung by any character in particular, but rather from the Crystal Gems, as a whole, to humans.
ALSO I WATCHED IT DIAOGJRIOAbIOFENDUJGFRHURCFUHUHJKDFER WHAT IS THIS BESIDES AMAZING?
I had that same impression too. Remember, the only people actually saying how awesome and good and nice Rose were Greg and Pearl (up until this episode where Bismuth also said that Rose was very moral etc., which kinda ruins this thing I'm about to say) who thought VERY POSITIVELY of her and thus could be unreliable narrators. So yeah, I do think that Rose is actually not half as good as Greg and Pearl think she is (also, from all the flashbacks, including the Garnet one, she seemed too... fascinated by other things, things she doesn't understand, like babies and fusion, and that fascination of hers is kinda creepy and objectifying). And I think this kind of realization will come to Steven too when she finally separates from his body (I have this theory that to the end of the show she will do that, and everyone will suddenly realize she was conscious this whole time (I mean, gems ARE conscious when they're poofed, right? At least Amethyst was in that episode where she was trying to impress Garnet) and Steven will finally be fully human and grow old together with Connie and etc.) and there will be some mixed feelings about it.
Also, I am 100% sure it is Rose singing the end credits. It literally could be nobody else, and the fact that she (or someone else that Rebecca Sugar will voice in some future episode) cannot feel love or is not nearly as good as 'You', nay Pearl or Greg, thinks of her probably proves this.
P.S. I didn't like whoever (Uzo Aduba?) voiced Bismuth.
I dunno, if anything, I feel like it's kind of weird that they're still keeping Bismuth bubbled. Like... Yeah, just tried to kill Steven, probably not good to have Steven in the room dealing with her. But couldn't Pearl and Garnet like... talk to her? Talk it out together? Agree to disagree?
Also, it feels really weak of Rose to have kept her old friend bubbled away for so long over an ethical disagreement, without even talking to her supposed friends about it. But I get the feeling it's supposed to feel weak. I've always gotten the impression that Rose isn't as good as people seem to think she is, but then the flashbacks we see with her always seem so nice... I'm not really sure what to think of her.
Gem Tier List
Peridot > Amethyst > Pearl > Garnet > Rose > Lapis > Jasper
And tbh I go back and forth between Jasper and Lapis because at least I kind of care about what Jasper is doing right now, even if it's probably awful.
among other reasons related to how bismuth was coded in the show which made me uneasy to watch but it's also just a cartoon but i'm just upset with it i guess and expected too much out of it.
