How did you learn to get better...

...at epicmafia? I'm still a somewhat of a new player, and I'm not that good at the game. How did you learn to get better?

If you give me the reigns I'd do it and do it right

The reigns are no longer mine to give

The mentor program actually belongs to the admin ever since Jasprar took them from me (which I had no say in)

And no, I don't want it back. Not now anyway and probably not ever

the mentee should be ruthlessly beat down by their mentor

Just like Pei Mei did the Bride in Kill Bill Part 2

If you want to revamp the mentor system (which can and should be done) you'd need to start from scratch and pick mentors who have something to teach, not people who are welcoming and friendly. Of course, I am sure there are players who possess both qualities. I won't name names but when you let some of the people who mentor now mentor, it's really not much of a "mentor" system. It's more of a "Find a friend to introduce you to comp" system, which serves its own purpose, but "mentor" is a misnomer

I'm not going to be the one to do it, it's too much time that I don't have and quite frankly I don't have the willpower for it anymore either

It cannot be done. There are not enough people who are active enough to sustain it. There never were. We tried and like barely enough people replied

Also, there's a wide gap between being friendly and having 9 Hateful Comments violations. I never asked people to be sunshine and rainbows 24/7

The mentor lobby was also a bad idea. All mentoring should be done in competitive games, the mentee should be ruthlessly beat down by their mentor, and then both of them should go back afterwards and analyze the game together

There isn't/wasn't enough interest for what I wanted to do (I don't want to do it anymore). People become inactive and it just won't work. There aren't enough people who are active enough to maintain a good mentoring lobby dude

I still play mean, and if you give me a mentee I'll teach them to win, not to be nice

The mentoring system is broken because virtually none of the mentors are good enough to explain tells with reliable accuracy.

that doesn't mean the mentoring system is broken, that means the mentors aren't capable of being mentors

Yes, it does. There are not enough great players on the site for a full roster of mentors and there probably never were.

mood and fronz

Good men. Good Mafia players.

Your vision for the mentor system was the problem, not the interest in it (of which there was and still is plenty) or the design of it (which is fine)

The mentor system is more just one on one advice and things now, it's not meant to be a huge thing and if you want some help with things it'll be there for you. That's all it is

I wish it could be more but no one has time to make it anything bigger, also there isn't as much interest in it as I would have hoped for anyways. And without that, it can't be as big as I hoped it once could

Is it a failed project? From what I and other users originally hoped for, yes, but it still serves purpose for some users and we can't take that away from them, and it can be revamped still if more interest/time are garnered

But those are two things that are pretty hard to find

I've offered to mentor numerous times and you told me I was too mean

That's because you were, obviously you've changed now

Want a spot?

i think the only good player i've seen is monk, nobody really stands out in games. far too many people let emotions control their actions or are fine with their initial opinion (partly because flipflopping lands them in ). pick any town game of monks and review it- you'll see what i mean. pretty good for learning imo

I find asking a lot of questions helps you understand better what's going on and why people do or think certain things. it's also a great way to get reads and appear towny if you're mafia. it'll help you develop an intuition about the game like more experienced players have. also like many people have said already, observing other players helps a lot too
edit: practice playing red heart 'competitive setups' to get familiar and comfortable with them before moving on to gold heart games

I think there is a rough skill cap which is insanely high. it takes a huge amount of games to get that exp

There's one player who is bordering on a skill cap and has the game down to a science, and then they're a couple inactives who play on a similar level. obv they take the game really seriously

But how long did it take you guys to actually get decent at the game?

Your stats are far better than most new players already. You probably have the innate skill to do well at competitive setups now. You just need to stop playing fancy pants and you'll get better rapidly

Make Kanye West run the mentor program.

Then vote him for president in 2020
