I want to know if the community thinks the word El Chicano is racists or not? We should be able to have a discussion about this whether it is civil or not is up to the participants. I do not think it is a racist term anymore because of civil rights movements using the term to bolster their cause. Also a new movie is coming out that shows the term in a new light.
Because of that I came up with a role that was removed from the threads.
Do you all think this term has changed enough in society to not be viewed as racist or not? No polls or petitions, just comment your opinion below.
Ookami is right to a certain extent. It's just that people want to find racism where there isn't. I am fairly sure that most of those of latino background wouldn't care less. Objectively speaking, I think it's more likely for an american to find that racist, rather than a mexican for instance.
Ultimately, when you're making a decision that doesn't matter, if you have two choices: One that offends people of a race, and one that does not; pick the one that does not.
Its literally just a role on a text based mafia site. Its certainly not worth all the drama.
That said, I'm throwing my hat into the "Yes, making a character with a bat and a knife who has a spanish name is definitely racist, and plays into the stereotypes perpetrated in a lot of culture today, especially in the United States" ring.
You act like you don't know me, or haven't been here for a minute. Just because I promote something, doesn't mean I believe it will do anything. If I have learned anything about EM, it is like the most pointless, not taken serious gaming website in the entire world. If you are taking any of this seriously, you need to go see a counselor, brohine. [And now I am going to wait for mods to really flip out about everything else that is going on.] If this site gets shut down because of the current investigations going on against it ... awesome.
but you're the one who made this topic to discuss this? no one really made a big deal out of it except you, and you then decided to really blow it out of proportion...
We are arguing over a Forum topic about a role that will probably never be coded. Because epicmafia.com is where we are going to solve the world's racist problems, on one of the most unethical games ever made ...
Also note, I don't think Chicano means Mexican Thug at all. That is what Ally called it or said other people called it. They are highly uninformed. So far we have literally one semi-valid argument, which actually turns around and threatens the entire idea of us playing this game in it's name, actions, and game play.
This EpicMafia game right now, is about a bunch of illegal actions, lynching-deathrowing people, shooting innocents or criminals, murdering people at night, vigilante cops, ect. the entire idea is offensive and criminal, and furthermore, the game play promotes the idea of commiting perjury. But we all understand this is a GAME about reading the truth. I am proposing a role that knocks people out with a baseball bat. Battery is illegal too. Calling him batter sounds basic. Calling him Thug is eh. What would you call him? I could call him Mike Tyson, but that would probably be racist too.
If I created an account name called ElChicano, would it be deleted? What about DonaldTrump or the various political names that right now many people feel offended by? If we uphold a community of easily being offended, over changed maybe racial terms, then we are not acting like adults. I get it the site is afraid of being shut down cause this all went astray for too long, when the truth is that harassment went astray for too long and too many people left.
And actually, I created a role called Ginger back in the day over 6 years ago and no one made this big of a deal out it, and it is far worse than this El Chicano role is, if anything it is laughable, you've all laughed about it, you bunch of racists, and don't tell me you haven't.
First off I am not exactly white, I am Cherokee and Pawnee, a little German, and little Italian.
El chicano / chicana means a man or woman born in Mexico who is now an American citizen. If anything it first might have been made derogatory by Mexicans in Mexico who were upset by other Mexicans leaving their heritage country. White people probably just followed suit, but in the 1960's chicanos themselves owned the term to lead themselves into their own civil rights.
A movie is being made to honor the idea that a California Chicano vigilante cop can fight off the cartels that are coming to ruin his community with drugs and gangs. In the movie, the Chicano isn't a thug at all, but fighting drug thugs.
The problem with the logic that says we can't name it a hispanic named origin like "mexican guy," in this case is actually racists.
There are plenty of stereotypes for white people like hicks, crackers, or hillbilly. If I created a dumb white character called Sling Blade or Forrest Gump not as many people would take offense to it. It might not be made a role for the same rational reasoning. And the name Mafia in this case is 100% like Chicano, because it has had it's own racists fights in history, especially during prohibiition. We are just farther removed from it. I probably can't create a role called , HItler, or Lustafa, without turning heads either.
