Hello there fellow sandboxers.
I am in uni doing a unit called PSYCH100 and my lecturer told me the best way to learn is to teach others and if you can then you know you got the info down gucci.
SO I've decided to teach yall about psychology! I will try to sum up or say a little bit about diff stuff i learn in class.
i may or may not drop this after like a week or 2 cause i never push through with stuff i set out to do but who cares yolo lets give this a try!!
What a great thread!! I'm almost finished getting my degree in psychology and I honestly love the content so much. Something I always find kind of crazy is that you don't really learn about psychology until you get to college/uni, and I think mental health awareness is extremely important. Some schools teach a basic course for it, but not all the time.
If you ever get a chance to take an abnormal psych class that's the one everyone usually really likes (it's an in depth course on disorders and therapy methods it's pretty cool). I'm taking a personality psych course this semester and I like it a ton so far. We've been learning a lot about the different tests that can measure personality, and what affects personality.
:o Well tbh the thing that stuck with me from the lecture was that Watson, the one who focused on behaviorism had an inappropriate relationship with his student and was kicked out from psychology world and instead went into advertisement which is why advertisement is what it is today. because of psychologists who go into that field.
my favorite part of psych class is how immature some adults are during topics like eating disorders, ocd and the psychosexual stages of that dude who did a lot of cocaine
part of my week 2 lecture was learning which person was the father of what type of psychology beleif but i was too distracted yesterday to write it down nnn
All living things are a product of evolution and natural selection, for example , when a baby cries it does so to communicate a need since they are dependent on their parents.
Psychologists believe we are influenced by genes but environment plays a large role
I've always been interested in the "nature vs nurture" topic but now psychologists are saying that both are closely linked. For example you are shaped by your environment but your own physical and biological limitations and conditions play a role in how you interact with the world or your potential
empricisim is the belief that we are all born with a blank slate. we learn stuff through experiance and we are all made equally with equal potential and your environment shapes you.
nativisim is the belief that we are born with innate knowledge that is common to all human beings. for example, why do babies react to loud noises? why do they automatically associate loud sound with fear or alarm?
There is a link between brain damage and certain cognitive functions depending on where the damage is.
for example there is the broca's area. if you damage that, usually through a stroke, you lose your ability to string words together into sentances but can still understand what has been said.
or if you damaged the wernicke area then you can struggle with understanding/following instructions
in the past people thought that the mind and the body was the same thing. They though tthat the mind initiated the body through the pineal gland which i think are the place where hormones are?
The questions the lecturer led with were pretty interesting
What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Are we born with a certain amount of knowledge, or do we have to learn everything ourselves? Is behaviour a product of free will or automatic responses?
Do we hold criminals accountable for their behaviours or not due to free will? Is there another source for their behaviours?
Please refrain from drama and speech that belittles others and/or mocks mental disorders.
A big part of psychology is understanding that people have difficulties due to one thing or other and our goal is to make life better for others either by solving problems not raised yet or helping people have a better life quality.
