social privilege mostly -- a poor white kid often garners sympathy, if he has attitude problems he'll be viewed as "troubled", whereas a poor black kid often garners distaste or judgement and if he exhibits the same kind of behavioral issues he's viewed as a troublemaker
it's easier to escape that situation as a poor white kid than a poor black kid
for any person who thinks the kneeling is offensive you are misguided and are probably gullible. what was really disrespectful was when Kapernick was SITTING during the anthem, it was an American US Army Veteran that met with Kapernick and gave him the idea to kneel as to show respect to the fallen, and to the country while still protesting what he believes in.

i mean, this isn't really true -- white people are privileged despite their class, there's different levels of privilege but a poor white kid still has privilege over a poor black kid for example
i definitely agree with you, i'm liberal but im NOT a lefist and to say "hateful" leftists are a small minority, agree to disagree, i actually think the opposite. i met more hateful lefitsts on this site alone than moderate ones.
Partially me being churlish but also partially because it seems to me that it's only white Americans that have this problem.
To me, what he's saying isn't so much 'I hate America and hope that its culture is destroyed.' Moreso, 'I don't agree with everything that's done in my country and I don't want to feel complicit in the violence and toxic behaviour that's done in its name and absolving it by standing for the anthem.'
I don't think not affording blind respect to the symbols and profanity of a country's culture constitutes hatred of the country itself.

Well my point is that I'm not sure there's anything meaningful in drawing a ring around a broad spectrum of different views and calling it 'modern leftism', or insinuating that they can't be engaged with.
Sure you might encounter people on that spectrum with hateful views, but in my experience they represent a very small minority - I think part of the problem is the social phenomenon of us pushing the most outrageous views and takes to the greatest level of prominence, giving the impression they represent the whole, I think we have to be wary of that fact.
Side note: to me 'liberalism', 'left-wing economics' and 'social justice' all have very distinct meanings to me and don't at all necessarily go hand in hand with each other, I won't bore anyone with 10 page definitions on what they mean and their history but I think it's worth considering for those reading this that would naturally just lump them all together.

Whites aren't privileged Rich people are Most rich people happen to be white If you start off rich, your path to success is a lot easier than if you start off poor. But poor people can still become rich.
